A supplier can decorate a tote and send it to your customer after the sale. The design only works as an offer when the bag itself suits the promised use. Choose the blank’s fabric, actual dimensions, handles and printable area before placing the artwork. Inspect a finished sample, including how the bag is packed, then calculate the delivered cost for the destination you sell to.
The blank is the undecorated bag. It determines what the buyer can carry and how the decoration can be applied. A cotton tote with a front print and a polyester bag printed across both sides are different products, even if both are called canvas totes.
Imagine a small bookshop selling a natural-colored tote with a black stack-of-books illustration. The example is hypothetical. Its purpose is ordinary book carrying, so the shape, handles and seams deserve as much attention as the design.
Your shop takes the payment and describes the product; the supplier produces the agreed item and dispatches it. The broader print-on-demand guide explains that model. This guide follows the bag-specific decisions from blank selection to customer delivery.
01
Read dimensions, fabric and handles correctly
Start with the carrying task. Measure the books or other ordinary contents you want the bag to hold, then compare those measurements with the usable bag opening and depth. A flat product photograph cannot show all of that.
A gusset is an added or folded section that lets the bottom or sides expand. A flat tote may hold thin items comfortably but take a different shape around thick books. Check whether the listed width describes the bag laid flat and whether the depth includes a gusset.
Handle drop answers the shoulder-clearance question
Handle length and handle drop are different measurements. Length follows the strap; drop describes the space between the top of the bag and the raised handle. Drop is the more direct starting point when considering shoulder clearance, but check it on the actual sample rather than promising a fit for every person.
Three real blanks are not interchangeable
Supplier specifications checked September 28, 2026 show these differences:
| Product | Fabric and listed bag size | Handles or capacity |
|---|---|---|
| Printify Natural Tote, S&S 42795 / product 1090 | Cotton, 15 × 16 inches | Listed handle length 20.5 inches and drop 9.5 inches. |
| Printful Large Eco Tote, econscious EC8001 | Cotton, 20 × 14 × 5 inches | Listed 25-inch straps and 23-liter capacity. |
| Prodigi H-BAG-CTB | Polyester canvas, 14 × 18.5 inches | Listed 26-inch handles; a different fabric and decoration route. |
On a phone, swipe the table sideways to compare every column.
The dimensions and capacity are supplier descriptions, not our physical measurements or load tests. The similarly named EC8000 is another blank; do not copy the larger EC8001’s capacity or size onto it.
Fabric weight is not a load test
Fabric weight helps describe the material, but it is not the whole bag’s carrying capacity. GSM means grams per square meter. Suppliers may instead give a fabric-weight specification in ounces. Compare the actual units and construction, and assess seams and handles on a sample before making a strength claim.
For the illustrative bookshop tote, record: natural cotton blank, exact manufacturer/style and supplier SKU, usable dimensions, gusset if any, handle drop, one black front design and the intended books. Ask the supplier to confirm missing measurements. That is a more useful buying request than “a large eco canvas bag.”
If you later offer ready-made bags without decoration, their stock and merchandising choices are a separate task. Here, the chosen blank and printable area must remain paired with the design.
02
Match the blank to decoration and a delivery route
A front print suits the bookshop’s simple black illustration. An all-over pattern needs a product made for that coverage. Embroidery needs a reachable stitch area and a stitch-ready design. Choose the actual supplier/product method rather than assuming all three can be added to any blank.
Prodigi: both-side print on polyester
Prodigi’s canvas tote illustrates the distinction: its H-BAG-CTB is polyester canvas, printed on both sides by sublimation, a process that transfers the image into the suitable fabric. Its listed fulfillment is UK-only. It is not a cotton-front-print option for every destination.
Printify: check the Canadian delivery quote
The Printify Natural Tote lists Canadian provider Duplium. Its displayed starting product price is $7.04, with shipping from $17.29. That combination is a reason to inspect the actual destination quote, rather than building a US offer around the low product price alone.
Gooten: confirm the actual front-print method
Gooten’s named cotton canvas-tote product has a front-only print area and dry/spot-clean care instructions. Its product method field and broader category explanation differ. Ask Gooten to confirm the decoration method for the selected item before using that detail in your specification or care promise.
A batch route can change the business
PrintsBags CBG303 describes a 220gsm cotton bag and a minimum of 25 white bags per design, with EU delivery. Its specific product section gives a typical production-and-delivery period of 10–14 working days, while generic site wording gives another production range. Confirm the schedule for your actual order and separate making the bags from transporting them.
Qikink describes an India-focused tote route with decoration, shipment, cash-on-delivery and GST components. Its header and summary prices differ. Those figures cannot become a US delivered quote by currency conversion; destination, payment method and tax treatment are part of the route.
Send each prospective supplier the same questions:
- Which exact blank, decoration method and front/back areas does this quote include?
- Is one customer order accepted, or must I buy a batch or meet a program minimum?
- Which destination and shipping method does the quote cover?
- What is the production period, transit estimate and stock-substitution policy?
- What packing and defect remedy are included?
For a first bookshop offer, prefer a route you can sample, fund and ship to your intended market. A batch may reduce a unit price but creates stock and dispatch work that a one-item POD order avoids.
03
Place the artwork and place a sample order
The bag’s dimensions are not its print dimensions. Handles, seams, folds and the selected decoration method can limit the usable surface. Download the exact product template instead of copying a general “tote print size” from another supplier.
For the book illustration, keep essential lines inside the template’s safe area. Safe area means the region where important artwork should remain clear of cutting, stitching or other uncertain edges. An all-over product also needs artwork extending into the required bleed, the extra printed area beyond the intended finished edge.
A pattern crossing seams can shift where the pieces join. Gooten’s cut-and-sew guidance warns about alignment; an otherwise acceptable sample should not be sold with a promise of perfect line matching unless the production process supports it.
Record the blank and printed sides together
For the bookshop example, keep one agreed natural-cotton blank and front-only book illustration as the starting offer. This proposed check prevents a page showing one bag while the printer receives another.
Before saving the product
Record the actual manufacturer/style, supplier SKU, color, decoration method and selected side. Download that option’s template. Do not use the bag’s outer dimensions as its print area or carry an all-over polyester template into a front-printed cotton job.
After saving the product
Reopen the product and inspect both front and back previews. The front should show the agreed book illustration; a promised plain reverse should remain plain. Compare the selected blank, side and saved file with the order acceptance. Sample that exact version before presenting it as a finished bag.
If you add a back print, confirm that the exact blank and method support it, obtain a new delivered quote and approve both sides. This is not a live account configuration or physical tote test.

A copyable inquiry
Please quote one natural cotton tote for ordinary book carrying. Confirm the blank manufacturer/style, supplier SKU, bag width/height/gusset, handle length and drop. Decoration is one black stack-of-books design on the front. Send the actual print template, accepted file format and care instructions. Include sample preparation, decoration, packing, shipment to [country/postal code], taxes or import charges assigned to us, production time and defect terms. Explain any minimum quantity or stock substitution.
Replace the destination placeholder before sending the request. Attach artwork you own or are permitted to reproduce. An outside print file prepared for a shirt is not automatically the correct size or shape for the bag; the custom T-shirt guide treats that different blank.
To turn the reply into an order:
- Select the exact product/provider in the account or arrange the supplier’s documented manual-order route.
- Record color, quantity, decoration side and the accepted artwork version with the store’s SKU.
- Export according to that template’s file, resolution and color instructions; inspect the placement preview.
- Pay for a sample with the actual recipient address, shipment and preparation charges. Review any requested artwork changes before release.
- Measure the received bag and inspect the print, seams and handles. Put the intended ordinary contents in it and document what you observed.
- Retain the accepted reference and publish only the corresponding blank/design combination.
The print-file and sample guide explains that record. A sample carrying a few books is useful observation, not a universal tested load rating.
04
Calculate the bag cost and the cash needed
Ask for the decorated bag’s total, not just the blank price. A second print area, setup, packing or a destination-specific shipment can change the order substantially.
A second side belongs in the new quote
Printful’s EC8001 page, rechecked October 11, offers front/back DTG and DTFlex print areas and lists a second print at $5.95 USD or €5.25. That is one provider’s selected product, not a fee for every tote.
Keep the specification
Ask the chosen supplier for the actual blank, print method, both sides and destination total. A quoted front-only bag has not become a two-sided offer merely because another provider supports it.
Recalculate after the change
Use the revised delivered charge in your own cost calculation before setting the price. The hypothetical $3.75 contribution below is for its stated front-print inputs; do not treat it as the margin of an unquoted two-sided bag.
Care instructions and blank identity must still match the selected product. A second print price does not establish carrying performance or a tested environmental claim.
A hypothetical bookshop order
Suppose the following quote applies to one front-printed cotton tote. These are illustrative USD costs, not a supplier or AIDrop quotation. Assume its supplier components include all charges assigned to the seller; confirm any additional tax, duty or remote-area charge in a real quote.
| Component | One tote order |
|---|---|
| Blank bag | $12.00 |
| Decoration | $3.00 |
| Packing | $1.00 |
| Shipment | $6.00 |
| Supplier total | $22.00 |
| Payment processing | $1.25 |
| Advertising | $4.00 |
| Expected remedy allowance | $1.00 |
| Total listed costs | $28.25 |
| Sale price | $32.00 |
| Contribution | $3.75 |
On a phone, swipe the table sideways to compare every column.
Contribution is what remains for other bills and profit after the listed costs. Here, $32 minus $28.25 leaves $3.75. Subscriptions, your work and other overhead are still outside the calculation.
Suppose the initial sample costs $22 and a one-time design/setup charge costs $18: $40 upfront. Ten orders generate $37.50 contribution. Subtracting that $40 leaves minus $2.50 for the first cycle, before other bills. A positive per-order figure can still take time to recover preparation costs.
Count actual remedies separately
The remedy allowance is an estimate. In a final profit record, use actual refunds and replacements without charging the same problem twice through both an allowance and its realized loss.
Funding orders before customer money arrives
The sample and setup in this example cost $40 before the first sale. Each later tote costs an assumed $22 for production and shipping, so ten customer orders need $220 paid to the supplier before store payouts. Keep separate cash for advertising and a customer refund or replacement. A supplier’s later defect credit cannot pay today’s next order.
A cheaper blank can cost more after shipping than a nearby printed bag. Compare complete destination quotes, then ask whether the final selling price also repays the $40 sample/setup cost across a realistic number of orders.
05
Set delivery, packaging and product claims
Write the listing from the accepted bag and the actual route. Include its fabric, dimensions, handles, decoration side, design and care instructions. A change to the blank may change several of those fields at once.
Care is product-specific. Prodigi’s polyester-canvas source gives a 30°C wash and drying-flat instructions. Gooten’s named cotton tote says dry/spot clean, while Printify’s Natural Tote has a different cold-wash care description. Copy the instructions for your product rather than publishing one cotton/polyester care rule.
Packing and delivery need agreement
Check the actual bag order before release:
- Variant and file: Confirm stock, approved artwork and address. Hold a mismatch; if the blank is gone, remove it or agree an alternative with the buyer rather than silently switching.
- Packing and identity: Ask how the print is protected and whose name appears on the parcel. Printful pack-ins require approval, insert stock at the right facility and a branding preset; eligibility depends on product and location.
- Delivery price and time: Request the postal-code quote with packed dimensions, weight and quantity. Separate approval, production and transit; identify who handles import clearance and assigned charges.
- Customer update: Use real dispatch and carrier events. A promotional estimator or generic footer date is not a delivery promise for this order.
Describe environmental benefits precisely
A material description is not an overall green claim
Cotton and reusable are useful product descriptions when accurate, but they do not by themselves prove an overall environmental benefit. The FTC Green Guides summary cautions against unqualified general claims such as “green” or “eco-friendly.”
If you claim recycled content or a certification, establish which component and exact product the evidence covers and what the claim means. A fabric certificate does not automatically certify every finished decorated bag or prove that its production has no environmental impact.
06
Deal with the wrong bag, bad print or failed handle
Start by comparing the received item with the order and approved sample. A polyester bag sent against a cotton order is a product mismatch. A misplaced book illustration is a decoration problem. A seam or handle failure needs close-up evidence and details of the reported use.
| Reported problem | Evidence to gather |
|---|---|
| Wrong blank, color or size | Order variant, label and measured bag photos. |
| Missing, faded or misplaced design | Approved file/version and clear photos of the affected area. |
| Seam or handle problem | Close-ups, supplier/sample reference and the customer’s description of use. |
| Parcel damage or delay | Packaging photos, address and actual carrier events. |
On a phone, swipe the table sideways to compare every column.
Correct the cause before sending another bag
Tell the customer whether you will replace or refund and when you will respond. Count any goodwill replacement now; a pending supplier credit is not cash.
- Supplier claim: Printful’s policy gives 30 days from delivery for damage, defects or misprints; lost parcels use the estimated delivery date. A correctly filled but unwanted choice is generally outside its defect cover. This does not replace your customer obligations.
- Repeat fault: Pause that variant, compare it with the approved sample and confirm a correction before more orders. One supplier credit does not prove the next bag is fixed.
If you are coordinating a China-side tote supplier, AIDrop’s product-sourcing service can help turn the bag, artwork, sample and packing requirements into a supplier request. Send the existing supplier/product link, destination and the decision through contact. Fabric, load and certification claims still require evidence for the actual product.
07
Frequently asked questions
Does canvas mean cotton?
No. Read the actual fiber composition. Prodigi’s named canvas tote is polyester, while several named Printful and Printify blanks are cotton. Fabric, decoration and care instructions must describe the selected product.
Can I start with one bag?
A one-item POD route can allow that, but verify the exact product and destination. Other custom printers require a batch, such as the 25-bag minimum described for PrintsBags CBG303. Add setup and shipping before comparing prices.
Can the same design be printed on both sides?
Only if that product and decoration route offer it. A front-only cotton tote is different from an all-over polyester tote. Extra-side charges, templates and alignment conditions may apply.
Why is handle drop more useful than handle length?
Handle drop describes clearance above the bag, while length follows the full strap. Both help describe the construction, but neither proves universal shoulder fit. Check the actual dimensions and sample for your intended use.
Why can shipping cost more than the tote?
A provider’s starting product price excludes the work of transporting a packed item to a particular destination. Origin, route, parcel size and quantity matter. Compare the delivered decorated order rather than the cheapest blank price.
Who does this model suit?
It can suit a shop or creator with a recognizable design, a clearly defined bag use and enough margin for preparation and customer problems. Start with a blank and route you can inspect and fund. Expand colors, sides or patterns after those choices are stable.
