You can use 1688 to source products for customer orders if the seller accepts your quantity and you arrange delivery to the customer. For many listings, the first delivery is to an address in China. Someone then receives the goods, prepares the parcel and sends it overseas. Being able to pay the seller does not mean that second journey is included.
Start with the decision holding up this purchase: payment eligibility and currency, what the China receiver must do, or the complete two-leg cost.
Alibaba Group describes 1688 as a domestic wholesale marketplace. It is useful for finding Chinese suppliers, but each seller sets the available products and purchase terms. Some support one-piece orders; others expect a larger purchase. International options also vary by listing, account and destination.
Follow a gray pencil pouch from a 1688 listing to a US customer. The pouch and prices are examples, not a tested supplier order. The useful questions are who buys it, where it first arrives, and who fixes a wrong color before it crosses the border.
01
Choose a product the seller can send one at a time
Find the product, then read the price at the quantity you will actually buy. A low price beside a large quantity tier is not the price for one customer order. MOQ means minimum order quantity: the smallest purchase the seller accepts for that offer. A sample, a one-piece order and a batch held for later orders can have different prices.
For our pouch, the store needs gray, 20 × 8 × 5 cm and one zippered compartment. These are invented specifications for the example. A variant is a particular choice, such as gray rather than black. A SKU is the item code that identifies that choice. Save the supplier's code and the matching picture together so “gray pouch” cannot turn into a different size or style.
Translate the picture as well as the page
WorldFirst’s language guide describes browser translation and 1688’s AIBUY option. Browser translation may leave text inside product pictures untranslated. Ask about unfamiliar labels, dimensions and quantity units rather than choosing the picture that looks closest.
Send a short inquiry the seller can answer:
I want the gray pouch shown in this link, 20 × 8 × 5 cm. Can I buy one sample, then order one pouch at a time as customers buy? Please quote the one-piece price and delivery to this China receiving address. Confirm the item code, current gray stock, dispatch time and plain packing. Please do not substitute a color or size without my approval.
Ask the receiver separately about delivery to the customer’s destination, such as US ZIP 10001 in our example. The seller’s answer about a China address does not settle that part. If the seller requires a batch, decide whether you want to own that stock and pay for storage. You can also choose another supplier. The supplier-finding guide covers the wider search; here, the important result is one workable pouch order.
02
Choose the payment route shown on your order
An overseas buyer does not always need an agent to make the purchase. WorldFirst documents ways to pay 1688 directly. First create the accounts you are eligible to use, with your real identity or business details. Then choose a route offered for the actual order. An instruction for one region or payment product should not be applied to every account.
| Documented route | How the money is paid | Important condition or cost |
|---|---|---|
| World Pay / Cross-border Pay 1688 | A funded CNH balance, meaning offshore Chinese renminbi | The legacy EU FAQ requires verification and account linking; it lists a 0.8% transaction rate plus a volume-based fee of up to 0.2% |
| WorldFirst Payments | A USD balance, with login and a one-time password at checkout | The AF help page says prior account linking is unnecessary; its amount-limit wording conflicts with another guide |
| Card payment, where offered | An eligible card through the supported checkout route | The AF comparison guide describes Visa/Mastercard and a 3% fee; confirm the actual available method and charge before paying |
On a phone, swipe the table sideways to compare every column.
Why a payment option can be missing
The legacy CNH FAQ also explains why that option can be missing: the transaction type, account activation, product restriction or seller acceptance may not fit. Its linking process uses the actual 1688 ID, rather than simply assuming your phone number or email is that ID. Allow enough balance for the purchase and charges. These conditions describe that route, not the newer USD option.
For WorldFirst Payments in USD, the documented sequence is to select USD at 1688 checkout, choose WorldFirst, log into a funded World Account, review the order and authorize it with a one-time password. An insufficient balance can cause the payment to fail. Check the order’s payment status before trying again so you do not accidentally fund a duplicate purchase.
Resolve the minimum for your actual route
Check the minimum before planning one-piece purchases. WorldFirst’s payment comparison says its balance method has a ¥1,000 minimum; its USD payment page says there are no payment limits. The public pages do not reconcile those statements. Ask which rule applies to your account and order before building a one-pouch plan around either one.
Read the final amount, currency conversion, fee and recipient before authorizing. If the supported option is unavailable, ask the provider or seller about the specific restriction, or agree a legitimate purchasing service. Paying a different bank account sent in chat is not a repair for a failed checkout. Once payment is settled, you still need to arrange where the pouch will go.
Keep the payment and refund record together
| Before payment | Record or question |
|---|---|
| Your actual route | Account region, verification, currency and the method offered for this order; do not transfer another region’s eligibility. |
| The accepted charge | Order ID, recipient, item/quantity, exchange rate, service fee and the final currency total. |
| If payment fails | Inspect the existing order and debit status before retrying or creating another purchase. |
| If the supplier refunds | Confirm who can request it, where money returns, the currency and any charges not recovered. Track the supplier refund separately from your customer refund. |
The linked WorldFirst CNH, USD and comparison references were rechecked on November 5, 2026. Their different account requirements and the conflicting minimum-amount statements remain visible above. Confirm the applicable rule for your account and order; no live payment or refund was tested.
03
Give the China receiver a clear job
If the seller only ships within China, there are two practical arrangements. You can buy the pouch yourself and appoint someone to receive and forward it. Or a purchasing agent can buy it under agreed terms and coordinate the onward shipment. A forwarder arranges transport; a fulfillment service may also receive, check, pick and pack orders. Ask which work is actually included.
Who can request the supplier return?
Name the buyer on the supplier order. If an agent buys in its own name, agree who can request a supplier return and how any recovered money reaches you. WorldFirst’s purchasing-agreement template illustrates this distinction and includes separate purchasing and warehouse expenses. It is a reference template, not your signed agreement.
A named example is ZQ Solution’s published 1688 process, which describes China warehouse receipt, requested checking and packing, then international dispatch. That documents its offer; we have not tested its warehouse or service. Compare the work and terms you need rather than treating catalog access as completed fulfillment.
What to compare
Give the China receiver the product link, item code, agreed 20 × 8 × 5 cm dimensions and the gray reference picture. Ask it to compare color, count, zipper operation and the packing for this pouch. Agree which photos or measurements you will receive.
What to hold
A black pouch does not match the approved gray order. Tell the receiver to hold it and request correction. Name the person who can authorize release. “Check quality” leaves those decisions unclear.
Quote the international parcel
Get the packed weight and dimensions, then a shipping option for the actual destination. Establish who handles export paperwork, import responsibilities and the final delivery. Ask whether the quote includes those charges. Checking an item does not certify it or guarantee every later order; consolidation can also add waiting time while other goods arrive.
For goods arriving from several sellers, compare waiting, consolidation and separate parcels before choosing one package. Receiving, handling and delay can offset an apparent freight saving.
If you need help working through that China-side handoff, AIDrop’s product-sourcing service can discuss the supplier, sample, product details and packing questions. Send the 1688 link, destination, expected order count and the exact receiving or shipping problem through contact. Confirm the work and quote for your offer. This is not a promise of a particular payment connection, shipping price or delivery time.
Ask for the work you actually need
| Task to quote | What to specify | Output to agree |
|---|---|---|
| Buying or payment | Who places the supplier order and pays, under whose account | Purchase reference, charge breakdown and refund authority |
| Receiving | Incoming seller parcels and expected item/variant counts | Receipt record tied to each supplier order |
| Checking | Color, dimensions, count and agreed function checks | Photos/measurements and who may release a mismatch; not an automatic laboratory test |
| Combining parcels | Items, waiting limit and permission to split | Actual packed contents, dimensions, weight and complete cost |
| Labels and packing | Exact label, card or container and included quantity | Approved version, material availability and application charge |
| International dispatch | Destination, product details, required service and import scope | Accepted route, total charges, dispatch record and tracking |
04
Add the second shipment before setting a price
The pouch’s price on 1688 is only the start. You also pay for its trip to the China receiver and its trip to the customer. Receiving, checking, packing, payment and currency conversion may be separate charges. Compare the complete parcel price, not two sellers’ unit prices with different work missing.
Here is an entirely hypothetical $24 order. Assume ¥21.60 for the pouch and ¥7.20 for domestic freight. At an assumed ¥7.20 per US dollar, those become $3 and $1. This exchange rate and every cost below are invented for the calculation, not a live rate or supplier, agent or AIDrop quote.
| Cost for one pouch | Assumed US dollars | What the amount covers |
|---|---|---|
| Product | $3.00 | The gray pouch |
| Domestic China delivery | $1.00 | Seller to receiver |
| Receiving and checking | $1.00 | The agreed receipt work |
| Repacking | $0.50 | Preparing this parcel |
| International delivery | $6.50 | Assumed quoted route to the customer |
| Purchasing payment / currency conversion | $0.50 | An assumed combined charge, not a WorldFirst rate |
| Store checkout fee | $1.00 | Assumed payment cost |
| Advertising | $4.00 | Assumed acquisition cost |
| Remedy allowance | $1.00 | Money set aside for possible problems |
| Total considered costs and allowance | $18.50 | Excludes taxes, duties, apps and overhead |
| Amount left from $24 | $5.50 | Before those excluded costs |
On a phone, swipe the table sideways to compare every column.
The amount left can change
That $5.50 is a limited calculation, not net profit. An import charge, a larger packed parcel or a replacement can change it. Ask who pays any destination charge and what the customer will be told. The quote-comparison guide helps normalize offers when one includes packing and another does not.
Cash to release ten orders
Product, domestic freight, receiving, repacking, international delivery and the assumed purchasing charge total $12.50 per order before store fees and ads. Ten require $125, even if customer payments have not reached the store’s bank.
Money for a real remedy
Keep refund cash separately. The $1 remedy allowance is a planning estimate; when the actual loss occurs, replace that estimate with the real cost. Do not subtract the same refund loss and the unused allowance twice.

05
Follow one order through both journeys
When the customer buys a gray pouch, the store receives an order. That does not automatically create or pay a 1688 purchase. Whether you work manually or use a documented service connection, follow one order far enough to know which person does each job.
- Match the store’s gray choice to the supplier’s exact item code. Confirm the order is paid, the address is usable and that choice remains available.
- Place or approve the supplier purchase with the agreed quantity, China receiving address and instructions. Keep the store order and supplier purchase linked in your own records.
- Follow domestic dispatch to the receiver. Dispatch means the seller sends the goods; it is different from their arrival at the China address.
- Have the receiver compare the pouch with the approved color, count and specification. Hold a mismatch rather than packing it for the customer.
- Approve the correct item and agreed packing for the international route. Give the shipping party the actual customer address and the information needed for that shipment.
- Follow the overseas carrier’s tracking and share the appropriate updates with the customer. A China delivery record is not evidence that the customer’s international parcel has arrived.
Suppose the receiver photographs a black pouch instead of gray. Ask for correction while it is still in China. If gray is unavailable, contact the customer about a supported wait, an alternative they approve or cancellation. Do not let the receiver send black simply because the supplier calls it equivalent.
Estimate the complete route
Agree dispatch and arrival estimates for the complete route before advertising them. An older 1688 cross-border supplier contract contains special one-piece and dispatch obligations for a selected program. It does not establish a universal 48-hour promise for every 1688 listing. Use the terms that actually apply to your seller and order, including receiving time and the second shipping leg.
06
Resolve a wrong pouch before and after export
If the receiver catches the wrong color
A wrong color found in China is much easier to address before it becomes an overseas parcel. Ask the buyer named on the supplier order to open the appropriate request, supply the agreed specification and receiving photos, and arrange the seller’s accepted remedy. Keep the item on hold until you know whether it will be returned, replaced or released with the customer’s approval.
The 1688 buyer-protection agreement, in the September 12, 2025 version reviewed for this guide, places duties on the merchant to describe and fulfill the offer properly. Its merchant deposit supports those duties. It does not turn every product into something manufactured or quality-guaranteed by the platform.
Check the actual return program
Do not assume every purchase has the same return window. The eight-day return agreement is an opt-in distribution program with product exceptions, condition requirements and buyer-paid freight. Ask whether it applies to your listing and when its clock starts. If an applicable supplier window runs from receipt in China, waiting for the international customer to inspect the pouch may leave you too late.
A return service has its own eligibility
The official return-warehouse service agreement, in the March 24, 2026 version reviewed, describes a separate eligible return/logistics service. It is not a promise that an overseas customer can return any 1688 product locally or for free. A provider’s own international return offer also needs to be read separately from the seller’s domestic terms.
If the customer finds a fault
Now suppose the correct gray pouch reaches the customer, but the zipper is broken. Ask for useful photos and the order details, then arrange the appropriate customer remedy under your offer and the rules that apply. Consider the practicality of returning a low-cost pouch internationally before asking the customer to post it. Pursue the supplier or service claim separately, with the item code, receipt check and shipment evidence.
If the store refunds the hypothetical $24 sale and later recovers only the $3 product cost from the supplier, those are different payments. The buyer should not have to wait for that $3 to become available. Nor does a product refund automatically recover international freight, advertising or store fees. This is why a small first offer needs a remedy plan as well as a cheap purchase price.
07
Questions before your first 1688 order
Do I always need a purchasing agent?
No. A supported direct payment route may let you buy yourself. You may still need a China receiver and international shipping partner. Choose help for the jobs you cannot perform; the China-agent guide covers comparing those services.
Can I order just one pouch?
Only when the selected seller accepts that quantity and the chosen payment and delivery arrangements work. A one-piece sample price does not establish the price or terms for repeated customer orders.
Can I buy without speaking Chinese?
Translation can help with searching and messages. Confirm picture text, variant labels, measurements and packing instructions explicitly. A saved reference picture and item code help both the seller and receiver understand the same order.
Does importing a product into my store complete the job?
No. Establish the actual purchase, payment, receiving, packing and tracking work supported by the service you choose. Do not assume a catalog import transfers a customer order or pays the supplier. Your store or marketplace also has its own product and sourcing rules.
Is 1688 always the cheapest option?
No. Compare the same product and complete destination parcel, including both shipping legs, fees and likely remedy costs. A workable first offer is one you can explain, fund and deliver—not just the lowest number on a product page.
