eBay is often the better starting point when customers already search for your product and a wholesale supplier can fulfill it reliably. Shopify is the stronger fit when you need control over the offer, storefront and repeat purchase experience—and have a credible way to attract buyers. Neither platform supplies a profitable product or a dependable supplier merely because you open an account.
The decision usually turns on two questions: whether your sourcing arrangement is allowed, and how much it costs to acquire a completed order. A lower transaction fee can disappear into advertising costs. Marketplace traffic can be valuable, but it does not guarantee that a new listing will sell.
This comparison uses US fee examples checked on September 21, 2026. Sellers in other markets should substitute their own account, category and payment rates. For a wider shortlist, see our guide to choosing a dropshipping platform.
01
What you get with each platform
Shopify provides software for running your own online store. You choose the domain, theme, product presentation and much of the shopping experience. eBay puts your listings inside an established marketplace, with its own search, checkout, buyer protections and seller standards.
| Decision | Shopify | eBay |
|---|---|---|
| Finding customers | Build traffic through search, content, ads, creators, referrals or an existing audience | Compete for buyers searching and browsing the marketplace; promotion may still cost money |
| Product presentation | Dedicated product pages, collections, bundles and brand content | Listing formats, categories and item specifics governed by eBay |
| Sourcing | Choose a supplier or sourcing app that fits your store and applicable rules | Wholesale supplier fulfillment is allowed; buying from another retailer or marketplace after the sale is prohibited |
| Main platform costs | Subscription, payment processing, optional apps and applicable transaction fees | Final value fees, possible insertion fees, optional Store subscription and advertising |
| Customer retention | Run permission-based email and other retention programs through your store | Work within eBay’s customer communication and transaction rules |
| Operational exposure | You handle customer promises, supplier failures and payment disputes | You handle the same fulfillment problems, plus marketplace performance consequences |
A recognizable replacement part illustrates the difference. An eBay buyer may already know the model number and compare price, delivery and seller reputation. A new product that needs a demonstration, a detailed sizing explanation or a coordinated bundle may benefit more from a Shopify page built around that buying decision.
That does not make every unfamiliar product unsuitable for eBay or every commodity unsuitable for Shopify. It tells you what has to win the sale: marketplace relevance and trust, or a reason for the customer to visit and choose your store.
02
Your supplier can decide the answer before fees do
eBay explicitly permits orders fulfilled directly by a wholesale supplier. It prohibits listing an item and then purchasing it from another retailer or marketplace that ships to your buyer. You remain responsible for safe delivery within the stated time and for the buyer’s experience. These are the material boundaries in eBay’s dropshipping policy.
If your plan is to wait for an eBay sale and then place a normal retail order on Amazon, Walmart or AliExpress for delivery to that customer, the arrangement does not become acceptable because an automation app can execute it. Software support and selling permission are separate issues.
For a wholesale arrangement, establish what the supplier has agreed to provide before listing: the exact products, resale permission where needed, stock availability, dispatch time, tracking and returns. Keep that agreement and the order records. A supplier’s claim that it “works with eBay” is less useful than an arrangement that actually fits the policy.
Shopify offers broader choice over how you assemble your supply operation. That includes supplier marketplaces, sourcing and fulfillment services, print-on-demand and eligible brand partnerships. Our Shopify dropshipping guide covers the store workflow. Greater choice still leaves you responsible for lawful products, accurate advertising and a delivery promise your supplier can meet.
The practical consequence is simple: approve a supply route first, then choose the channel. Do not build a catalog around a source you will have to replace immediately after launch.
03
Compare current fees on the same basis
For a US merchant, Shopify Basic currently lists $39 per month with monthly billing, or $29 per month when paid yearly, with online standard card processing at 2.9% plus $0.30. Premium cards and other payment methods have different rates. The Basic plan also lists a 2% third-party transaction fee. See Shopify’s pricing page for the applicable plan and market.
That 2% should not automatically be added to an ordinary Shopify Payments card order. It can apply when an external payment provider processes the order, in addition to that provider’s processing fees; exemptions and other payment-method rules matter. Shopify explains these distinctions in its third-party transaction fee documentation.
For a US eBay seller without a Store subscription, the current standard rate for most categories is 13.6% of the total sale amount up to $7,500 per item, plus $0.40 per order over $10. The total fee base includes sales tax and buyer-paid shipping, as well as the item price. There is no separate third-party payment-processing charge to add to this final value fee. Category exceptions apply. eBay’s selling fee schedule is the relevant source.
The same schedule provides 250 zero-insertion-fee listings per month in eligible categories, followed by a typical $0.35 insertion fee. A free listing allowance is not an account’s selling limit, and unused listings do not create demand.
An eBay Store is optional. Basic currently costs $27.95 per month on monthly renewal or $21.95 per month on yearly renewal, and can change listing allowances and category fees. Use the Store fee schedule to calculate the savings on your actual mix before subscribing. Do not compare Shopify’s paid subscription with eBay’s paid Store as though both were mandatory.
04
A $40 order: where the fee advantage disappears
Consider a hypothetical US sale with a $40 customer price, no separately collected shipping, $24 in supplier product and delivery costs, and a $2 reserve for expected refunds and other order problems. Assume 50 orders per month. For clarity, this first calculation excludes sales tax, advertising, app costs and additional overhead.
Shopify uses Basic monthly billing and a standard domestic Shopify Payments card. eBay uses the non-Store rate for an eligible category, within its free listing allowance, without optional promotions or additional account charges.
| Per-order calculation | Shopify | eBay |
|---|---|---|
| Customer revenue | $40.00 | $40.00 |
| Supplier product and delivery | −$24.00 | −$24.00 |
| Payment or final value fee | −$1.46 | −$5.84 |
| Monthly plan allocated across 50 orders | −$0.78 | $0.00 |
| Illustrative problem reserve | −$2.00 | −$2.00 |
| Contribution before acquisition and other overhead | $11.76 | $8.16 |
Shopify has $3.60 more room per order under these assumptions. If it costs $7 to acquire a Shopify customer while the comparable eBay order needs no paid promotion, contribution becomes $4.76 on Shopify versus $8.16 on eBay. If an established audience brings that Shopify acquisition cost down to $2, its contribution becomes $9.76 instead.
The relevant threshold is the difference in acquisition cost. In this example, Shopify can spend $3.60 more per completed order than eBay before their contributions become equal. If eBay also needs paid promotion, include that cost on its side rather than treating marketplace discovery as free.
Volume changes the calculation. At ten monthly orders, Shopify’s $39 plan contributes $3.90 per order; at 100, it contributes $0.39. Apps, domain expenses and any additional fixed operating costs need their own allocation. A subscription that looks small at steady volume can be material during a slow test.
Taxes also affect fee arithmetic. For example, $3.20 of sales tax added to the illustrative eBay transaction increases a 13.6% fee by about $0.44, even though the tax is not your revenue. Recalculate payment fees against the actual amount processed on Shopify too. The dropshipping profit margin guide explains how these costs fit into contribution and net profit.
These are comparisons of assumptions, not earnings forecasts. The two channels may produce different selling prices, return rates and order volumes. A spreadsheet that holds them equal is useful for isolating costs; your live results must replace those assumptions.
05
Traffic and merchandising require different work
On eBay, begin with the product a buyer is already trying to find. Accurate identifiers, item specifics, compatibility information, useful photos and a credible delivery date help that buyer assess your listing. The commercial challenge is to offer a convincing purchase alongside other sellers carrying similar goods.
Do not interpret a large marketplace audience as an entitlement to views. A poorly matched category, weak listing or uncompetitive delivered price can still attract little interest. Test a small coherent product range so you can diagnose what changed when you improve a title, price or offer.
On Shopify, the first question is where the visitor will come from. “We will run ads” needs a product demonstration, an audience hypothesis, a budget and a measure of completed purchases. Search traffic needs pages that answer real product questions. An existing customer list or creator audience changes the economics, but it should be relevant to the product you intend to sell.
The extra control is useful when the offer needs explanation. You can show compatibility photos, compare sizes, explain materials, build a bundle and present the brand consistently across the store. That control also creates work: weak copy and borrowed supplier images do not improve simply because they sit on your own domain.
For retention, evaluate the actual purchase pattern. A product that customers replenish or buy in related sets may justify better post-purchase content and permission-based email. An item typically bought once may have less repeat-purchase value than an optimistic lifetime-value estimate suggests.
06
Fulfillment and returns remain your job
Both channels need a reliable link between the customer’s ordered variant and the supplier’s available stock. The visible product title is not enough: size, color, pack quantity, ship-from warehouse and delivery service all need to match.
On eBay, an out-of-stock cancellation can contribute to transaction defects. Unresolved buyer cases and fulfillment performance affect seller status, with possible restrictions or higher fees. The seller standards policy explains the US evaluation; other eBay sites can apply different thresholds.
Set eBay payment, shipping and return policies around the actual product route. Its business policies let you reuse those terms across appropriate listings. Avoid applying one convenient template to products with substantially different dispatch locations or return arrangements.
On Shopify, the absence of an eBay seller dashboard does not make a failed shipment harmless. You still have a customer to update, a refund or dispute to resolve and a supplier claim to document. Plan returns and refunds separately from supplier reimbursement: those two payments may occur on different dates and for different amounts.
Before expanding either channel, follow one real order from payment through supplier acceptance, carrier pickup and delivery. Inspect the received item and packaging, then confirm who would handle a wrong variant or damaged product. Treat the result as evidence about that product and route, not a guarantee for the whole catalog.
07
Can you sell through both?
Yes. Shopify can serve as a store and a central catalog while an integration manages eBay listings and orders. This can be useful once one channel already has a workable offer and the second provides a distinct source of demand.
Connecting the accounts does not erase eBay’s requirements. Shopify’s Marketplace Connect listing documentation notes that marketplace-specific product information and identifiers still apply, with exemptions handled through the relevant marketplace where available.
Decide which system controls stock, price and fulfillment before connecting a supplier app and marketplace connector. Two systems independently submitting the same order can create duplicate purchases. A shared stock figure without a reserve can also sell the same last unit through both channels.
Keep the order identities separate: Shopify order, eBay transaction and supplier purchase. Confirm that a cancellation reaches the supplier before dispatch, and that a tracking update returns to the channel where the customer bought. Add the second channel after you can explain and recover these events on the first.
08
Which should you choose first?
Choose eBay first when you have a suitable wholesale arrangement, the products already have recognizable marketplace demand, and your advantage is a competitive delivered offer. Start without an optional Store subscription if its fee savings do not yet justify the cost.
Choose Shopify first when a distinct presentation, bundle, brand or customer relationship matters to the sale, and you have a plausible acquisition route. Reserve funds for learning whether that route converts, as well as for paying suppliers before all customer funds are available.
If neither description fits, the missing work is product and supplier validation. Opening both accounts adds administration without resolving why someone will buy or how the order will be delivered.
Is eBay dropshipping cheaper than Shopify?
It can be cheaper to begin because you do not need a paid Store subscription. At higher sales volume, Shopify’s lower standard card-processing percentage can leave more contribution before acquisition costs. Compare the full fee base, paid promotion, apps and monthly volume rather than one headline rate.
Can I use the same supplier on both platforms?
Possibly, if the actual supplier arrangement meets each channel’s rules and supports the promised fulfillment. A retail purchase workflow allowed by your store setup should not be assumed suitable for eBay. Separate the supplier’s wholesale agreement from what an integration can technically import.
Does Shopify bring customers to my store?
Shopify provides selling and marketing tools, but a newly created store should not assume a flow of qualified buyers. Plan and measure a specific acquisition route. The value of store control depends partly on your ability to bring people to that experience.
