Start print on demand wall art with one format and two sizes that have the same proportions. Use the chosen provider’s template, then inspect a printed and shipped sample of each variant. Check its delivered cost and damage remedy before putting the size buttons in your store.
A poster, framed print and canvas can show the same drawing but hide different parts of it. A signature near the edge might survive the poster, disappear under a frame’s mat, or wrap around the side of a canvas. Choosing the physical item first helps you prepare the right file.

01
Decide what the customer will unwrap
An unframed poster is a sheet the buyer can frame. A framed print includes a finished frame, sometimes with a mat—the border between the artwork and frame. A stretched canvas has fabric pulled around a supporting frame, so part of the design can continue around the sides.
On a phone, swipe across the table to compare the columns.
| Format | File check | Sample check | Packing question |
|---|---|---|---|
| Unframed poster | Does the crop, border and required trimming area preserve the art? | Are fine lines, colors and paper finish right? | Does this size arrive flat or rolled? |
| Framed print | What stays visible inside the mat or frame opening? | Are the opening, frame finish and joints as described? | How are the glazing and corners protected? |
| Wrapped canvas | Which part remains on the front, and which wraps around the sides? | Are texture, edge treatment and back acceptable? | How is the stretched frame protected in its box? |
Prodigi’s wall-art guide explains the visible area lost under a mat and around a canvas. Use your selected product’s template for the exact allowances.
Choose the surface for the design, too. Fine lettering, a photograph and a bold illustration may look different on different papers. Printful describes its matte paper as non-reflective and premium luster as glossy, with canvas another option. Those descriptions help you choose a sample; they do not prove how your artwork will print.
Compare providers on the actual format, finish and sizes you want. Ask for the template, visible area, production location for your market, packing and damage terms. If the constructions differ, they are different products to sample—not interchangeable offers under the same “wall art” heading.
Be precise about dimensions. A buyer needs to know whether 18 × 24 inches describes the sheet, visible image or outer frame. State whether the poster has a border, whether a frame is included, and which hanging hardware comes with a framed piece or canvas.
02
Keep the shape of the artwork
The aspect ratio is the relationship between width and height. A 12 × 16 inch print and an 18 × 24 inch print both have a 3:4 ratio. They can often share a composition if the original file contains enough detail.

A 12 × 18 inch print has a 2:3 ratio. To use the same artwork, you need to crop it, add a border or make a new composition. Stretching the image would distort it.
The crop removes 0.75 inch on each side
Here is what cropping means for these sizes. Enlarge the 12 × 16 composition until its height is 18 inches. Its width becomes 13.5 inches. To fill a print only 12 inches wide, you lose 1.5 inches across the width—0.75 inch from each side if centered. Check whether a face, lettering or signature sits in that strip.
You can keep the whole image by adding space above and below, but the margins will look different. A separate 2:3 composition gives you another way to preserve important details. This calculation describes the example crop, not the provider’s extra printing or trimming allowance.
Next, check the pixels. At a planning target of 300 pixels per inch:
On a phone, swipe across the table to compare the columns.
| Finished image area | Calculation | Image dimensions |
|---|---|---|
| 12 × 16 inches | 12 × 300; 16 × 300 | 3,600 × 4,800 pixels |
| 18 × 24 inches | 18 × 300; 24 × 300 | 5,400 × 7,200 pixels |
These figures cover the finished image area. The template may add bleed, which is extra artwork beyond the cut line, or canvas wrap. It may also leave a safe area for details that must stay visible.
300 is not a universal acceptance rule. Printful’s file guidance varies by product and technique. Printify directs you to the selected product’s Upload section in its Product Creator.
Changing a small file’s DPI setting does not create more detail. DPI is a printing-density setting; the real pixel dimensions and intended print size still matter. If the larger variant needs more detail than the master contains, remove that size or return to a better original.
03
Make a file you can approve on paper
Keep the master artwork separate from files exported for a provider. A poster file should not quietly replace a canvas file with a different crop or wrap.
- Choose the exact product and size.
- Open its template and note image area, trim, bleed, mat opening or wrap as applicable.
- Export for that ratio and construction, keeping important details inside the safe visible area.
- Inspect the uploaded preview at every size and record the file name and version.
- Order the physical sample before approving color, finish and construction.
Printful’s wall-art file guide describes PNG or JPEG, sRGB color and full-bleed designs for its relevant products. Follow the selected product’s rules when exporting. A name such as poster-3x4-v2 helps distinguish that approved file from a framed or wrapped version. Save the template or requirements with it.
Check a wrapped canvas file
For print on demand canvas dropshipping, the visible front and the complete print file are different measurements. Prodigi’s image-wrap guidance explains why artwork also covers the sides. Use the chosen variant’s template rather than a universal extra margin.
Work through one provider-specific canvas file
For a 20 × 28 inch front, Prodigi’s published 38 mm frame, image-wrap example requires 23.15 × 31.15 inches of artwork. That adds about 1.575 inches on each edge. This is a named provider’s wrap example, not a margin to copy into every canvas template.
- Finished visible front: 20 × 28 inches.
- Whole image-wrap artwork: 23.15 × 31.15 inches.
- At a planning target of 300 pixels per inch: 6,945 × 9,345 pixels for that whole artwork.
- Check the exact template: keep the signature on the safe front and use background artwork for the sides.
The whole file has a different shape from the visible front. Stretching a finished-front poster export to those outer dimensions can distort the art or put the signature on an edge. Use the master to compose the front and wrap area, inspect the preview, then check that exact physical canvas. Prodigi gives a different allowance for its 19 mm construction.

- Record the exact object: choose the provider, finished size, frame depth and wrap option. Name your own file
canvas-20x28-38mm-wrap-v1and retain the template it was made for; this is a sample naming convention, not a provider field. - Place the artwork: keep faces, lettering and signatures on the safe visible front. Supply the extra background required by that wrap method. In Printful, consult the selected product’s File guidelines/template; remove guide layers before exporting, following its file preparation instructions.
- Inspect after uploading: compare the face and all four sides. A 3:4 poster export alone cannot show that a wrapped 3:4 front will keep its lettering visible. Do not enlarge a small master just to fill the template.
- Approve the physical version: inspect an order of that exact canvas size and construction, including side treatment, back, lettering and delivered parcel. A discounted small sample or a mockup cannot approve an untested larger variant.
Keep the canvas listing on hold if key text moves onto the side, a blank edge appears or the intended file version is not confirmed. Correct the export, inspect the upload again and repeat the physical checks affected by the change.
If the artwork includes a licensed image, font or photograph, confirm that your permission covers selling physical products. A successful upload is not proof of permission.
On the sample, check small text, dark areas, borders and color. For a frame, look at the visible opening and joints. For canvas, inspect the sides and back. View it as a buyer would: a poster laid flat, a framed print upright and lettering at a normal viewing distance.
Record the problem specifically:
- File: cropped text or the wrong border needs an export or layout change.
- Material or finish: the surface differs from the offer; reconsider that product choice.
- Assembly: loose joints or poor construction need a provider response.
- Transit: creases or broken corners need a packing and delivery check.
“Looks okay” does not help you identify what to change. Photos and the file, size and finish used for the order do.
Discounted small samples do not approve a larger variant
Check sample-program limits before ordering. Printful’s current rules make discounted samples account-dependent. For wall art, framed samples are limited to 8 × 10 inches and canvas to 12 × 12; unframed posters can use all available sizes. To inspect its 12 × 18 framed product, you need a regular order of that exact variant. The smaller discounted sample cannot approve the larger crop, frame or parcel.
A new ratio, size or construction needs the checks affected by that change. Keep the approved object or its recorded details beside the listing images while writing the description.
04
Check the parcel as well as the print
The sample needs to survive delivery, too. Printful’s packaging guide describes triangular kraft boxes or stay-flat envelopes for posters, depending on size and location. Framed posters and canvases use cardboard boxes with protective cushioning. Another provider or destination can use a different pack.
Ask how your exact variant ships: flat, rolled or boxed. Check protection for the face, glazing and corners, and whether items share a parcel. A rolled poster may need flattening before framing. A frame has different breakage risks and can cost more to deliver.
Order the sample to the market you intend to serve. Photograph the unopened parcel, the protection inside and the finished item. A bent sheet, loose frame and production crop each point to a different fix.
A customer buying a framed print and an unframed poster may receive separate parcels. Confirm which combinations can travel together, then explain any separate delivery expectations. Do not promise a single box simply because the items were paid for together.
Agree on who approves a damaged replacement, what evidence is required and how quickly you must report it. The dropshipping packaging guide explains wider packing choices; your product page should describe the actual arrival conditions rather than relying on “securely packaged.”
05
Price each size and a possible remake
Get a separate quote for every size and construction. A shared artwork file does not mean a shared product price or parcel cost.
Add the exact product and print charge, selected extras, shipping to the buyer’s address, merchant-paid taxes or duties, selling and payment fees, and any subscription cost allocated to the order. Include an allowance for damage, reprints or refunds you may have to fund.
Subtract those costs and acquisition cost—the money spent to win the order—from the amount the customer pays, including customer-paid shipping. The remainder contributes toward overhead; it is not final profit. A second item traveling separately needs its own shipping line.
Printful’s pricing explanation separates shipping from the product charge. Its USD shipping table, checked September 28, 2026, gives these US single-item category references:
On a phone, swipe across the table to compare the columns.
| Variant | Product quote needed | Shipping reference | Extra check before listing |
|---|---|---|---|
| 12 × 16 unframed poster | Exact paper, finish, size and extras | Small-poster category: $4.99 | Sample, packing and damage remedy. |
| 18 × 24 unframed poster | Its own product price, despite the shared 3:4 file | Small-poster category: $4.99 | Larger print’s detail and possible remake cost. |
| 12 × 18 framed poster | Exact frame, print, mat or finish options | Small-framed category: $10.89 | Exact framed sample, corner protection and replacement shipment. |
Get a current quote before setting prices
These are historical September 28 USD category references, not a current checkout quote. The page retrieved for this October 11 review defaulted to GBP, so it does not reconfirm those USD amounts. Obtain a current quote for the exact destination, method, fulfillment location and options before pricing a live variant. These rates do not apply to another provider.
Also calculate a bad order. Under Printful’s current policy, eligible damage, defects, misprints or loss can qualify for reshipment or refund. Report quality problems within 30 days of delivery, or loss within 30 days of estimated delivery, with the required evidence. Quality claims need clear photos.
That provider generally excludes buyer-selected wrong sizes or colors and change of mind. Its separate Brazil guidance describes a seven-day refund-request right after receipt for orders delivered there. Supplier reimbursement terms do not replace your store’s response or its applicable obligations.
A seller-approved file mistake needs its own remedy budget
If you approved a file that cut off the signature, you may have to pay for the new print and shipment yourself. Record the money left on a normal order and the cash needed for that remake or a customer refund. Hold or reprice a variant when its costs make the promised remedy unaffordable. An average damage allowance is useful for pricing, but one actual broken frame can cost much more.
For a canvas, calculate the actual remedy separately. These are invented USD inputs, not provider or AIDrop prices. They exclude tax, subscriptions and overhead; no average damage allowance is added on top of the actual loss.
One $50 canvas sale
Finished canvas $20 + parcel $10 + processing $2 + ads $8 = $40. That leaves $10 before a remedy and other costs.
A seller-funded remake
If you pay for another $20 canvas and $10 parcel with no supplier credit, the extra $30 changes $10 to a $20 loss. A supplier-approved free remake has different costs; record only the amounts you actually bear.
A full refund instead
If you return the full $50 and cannot recover the original $40 spent, the order loses $40. The refund needs $50 available cash. This alternative is not added to the remake case. Keep the customer remedy separate from any later supplier claim.
06
Add only the variants you have checked
Write the listing from the item you approved. State poster, framed print or canvas; finished size and visible image area where different; surface finish; frame or side treatment; and what arrives with it.
Show scale without letting a room mockup imply a frame is included with an unframed poster. Photos presented as texture or construction proof should come from an actual sample.
Give both production and transit information in the delivery estimate. Explain whom the customer should contact for a problem and what to send. Keep the provider’s claim deadline and remedy in your own records. Made-to-order does not create one universal return rule.
This illustrative record shows how to keep three variants distinct. It is a proposed checklist, not a report of samples or shipments performed by AIDrop.
On a phone, swipe across the table to compare the columns.
| Variant | File and crop | Physical proof | Parcel and cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| 12 × 16 poster | art-3x4-v2; border checked |
Printed text and paper finish | Flat or rolled route, delivered quote and damage remedy. |
| 18 × 24 poster | Same 3:4 composition; enough pixels for this size | Larger-size sample | Its own pack, delivered quote and remake cost. |
| 12 × 18 framed | art-2x3-frame-v1; separate crop and visible window |
Frame, mat opening and joints | Box, corner protection, quote and replacement process. |
Add the two 3:4 sizes only when each has an approved export, physical sample, packing route and acceptable delivered and replacement costs. Keep the 2:3 framed size off the listing until its own crop, window, boxed arrival and costs are checked.
When the artwork, frame, size or provider changes, revisit the affected checks. The print on demand dropshipping guide covers the wider order process.
If your range also needs a ready-made frame or related packing sourced in China, AIDrop’s product sourcing service can help compare suppliers, samples and specifications, including quality and packing questions.
Send the product link, dimensions, variant, destination and decision you need through contact.
Confirm artwork-file preparation with the print provider; it is a separate service need.
07
Common questions about POD wall art
Can I use the poster export for a wrapped canvas?
Use the master artwork, but make an export for the exact canvas template and wrap method. The front may have the same ratio while the complete file needs extra image area for the sides. Check the uploaded face and sides, keep essential details in the safe visible area, then inspect the actual size and construction before approving the listing.
Is 300 DPI mandatory for every product?
No. The exact provider and product set the requirement. Check real pixel dimensions at the finished size, the template and the printed sample.
Can one file serve every size?
Only if its proportions, resolution and visible area fit each product. A new ratio, mat or canvas wrap can need a separate composition or export.
Should posters arrive rolled or flat?
Confirm the provider’s method for that size and market. Describe any flattening needed and check the actual sample’s arrival condition before promising a packing method.
