Illustrative Depop product choices: catalogue dropshipping is prohibited; an original-design shirt needs personal assessment, original photos and other conditions.

Depop does not allow ordinary catalogue dropshipping: listing a mass-produced item and buying it from a supplier or another marketplace after someone orders it. Its rules allow a different, limited route for handcrafted or on-demand items that you personally designed. You must buy and assess the items, take original product photos, and disclose the manufacturing partner and delivery details. Depop’s current dropshipping policy sets out those conditions.

Suppose Leah is considering two shop ideas. One is an unchanged dress from a supplier catalogue. The other is a shirt printed with artwork she created herself. Those ideas have different answers under Depop’s rules, even if a supplier would ship both.

For the original-design route, permission is only the first question. Leah still needs a personally assessed product, truthful listing, workable production time, money to pay the partner and a way to handle the buyer’s refund. A connection tool cannot make the catalogue-dress route permissible.

01

A catalogue dress and your own design are different

Leah cannot simply list the supplier’s dress, wait for a buyer, then ask the supplier to send it. Buying one sample of that unchanged dress does not turn it into her design. Neither does permission to reuse the supplier’s photos. Depop’s prohibited-items list includes bought-to-order catalogue goods and dropshipped listings using stock, customer or supplier photos.

Hypothetical listing What Depop’s rules mean
An unchanged catalogue dress, ordered from the supplier after the sale Prohibited catalogue dropshipping. Taking a sample photo or calling it handmade does not change the product’s origin.
A shirt carrying Leah’s personally created cloud illustration, made by a disclosed partner Potentially fits the seller-designed on-demand exception, provided Leah purchases and assesses the item, uses original photos and meets the other rules.
A supplier’s popular graphic copied onto another shirt Calling it a design does not establish Leah’s authorship or the necessary rights.

On a phone, swipe the table sideways to compare every column.

Depop’s terms prohibit offering an item you do not possess unless you personally designed it. Selling stock you actually possess is a different activity from buying catalogue products only after receiving orders, though the other listing rules still apply.

The design exception is not blanket approval for every item. The prohibited list also names dropshipped designer, luxury, electronic and cosmetic products. Do not label recently mass-produced goods as vintage or handmade, and do not claim a product is sustainable or ethically made without the evidence Depop requires.

Keep genuine design and artwork rights

Leah must also own the rights to her artwork and listing content. A borrowed logo, another artist’s illustration or an unauthorized design cannot become acceptable simply because a print service can produce it. The example here is fictional; it does not establish that a particular product or seller has been approved.

02

Buy and assess the item before you list it

For Leah’s own-design shirt, buying and assessing the item is a policy requirement, not a substitute for personally designing it. She should inspect the selected fabric, fit, print position and packaging, then photograph the actual item herself. We have not purchased or tested such a sample.

Prepare a listing from what you can truthfully show:

  • Original photos of the assessed shirt, including the print and useful fit details.
  • Your own description with material information, exact measurements, condition and any relevant limitations.
  • A clear statement that a third party produces the item, where that partner is based, and realistic shipping and delivery estimates.
  • Design files and partner information you can supply if Depop asks about the item’s origin or production.

For example, Leah’s listing notes could say: “My original cloud illustration, printed by a production partner in [actual location]. Measurements and photos are from the shirt I purchased and assessed. Production takes [confirmed estimate], followed by tracked delivery to [supported destination].” Replace those placeholders with facts from the actual product and partner. This is an illustrative preparation note, not a ready-to-post claim or an approved listing.

Check the production partner too

A platform does not audit your chosen factory

Ask the manufacturing partner about its working conditions as well as the product. Depop’s manufacturing guidelines address labor, safety and legal working conditions; Depop’s presence does not itself certify or audit your chosen factory. Avoid making ethical or environmental claims you cannot support.

Before posting, make sure the seller account and its payment setup are eligible for the actual country. Depop’s listing guide requires Depop Payments in the UK, US and Australia, and a linked active PayPal account in other locations. Use Sell in the app or Sell now on the website, add accurate category, price and shipping details, and review the whole listing before posting. A suggested price is not a calculation of your costs.

03

Choose a production time that fits the shipping rules

Ask the partner how long this exact shirt takes to produce, where it dispatches from, and which tracked service can deliver it. Confirm that the available shipment method fits your Depop listing and country. A made-to-order description does not override a platform shipping deadline.

The country changes the shipment route

In the US, Depop’s shipping guide says an order not shipped within 10 days of purchase is automatically cancelled and refunded. If the listing uses Other shipping, arrange and pay for tracked postage and add the correct tracking within 10 days. You cannot amend it after adding it, so match the number to the actual parcel before saving.

Check the US Other-shipping tracking before saving

The US shipping instructions, rechecked October 11, say that Other shipping requires your own tracked service. The tracking must be added within ten days, and cannot be amended after it is saved. This concerns an eligible original-design sale, not a workaround for catalogue goods.

Before adding tracking

Match the actual provider parcel, receipt address and carrier reference to the correct Depop sale. Confirm dispatch and available carrier evidence. Do not paste a reference from another customer or treat a draft label as proof the parcel was sent.

Add it and check the saved receipt

On the web, open your profile → Your selling hub → Sold, select the item and use the receipt drawer’s shipment/tracking action. Reopen the sold item and check the saved reference. If it is wrong, contact Depop through its supported route; the guide does not promise a self-service edit.

If the listing uses Depop Shipping instead, its generated label must be used. Original-design permission, timely shipment and seller protection are separate conditions. No seller account or parcel was tested for this guide.

Check the route in your country

In the UK, Other shipping likewise requires your own tracked service and tracking entry. Australia differs: its current guide says new listings use Depop Shipping through Australia Post, while existing Other listings remain manual. That page contains an unresolved date placeholder, so it does not establish a reliable historical cutoff date. Check the actual listing’s available method before proposing an overseas production arrangement.

A US postage label needs an accurate dispatch address, parcel size and the buyer’s receipt address. Do not use Leah’s home address as the origin for a parcel actually dispatched by a partner in another country. If a buyer asks for shipment elsewhere, resolve the order through Depop’s supported process rather than simply changing the destination off the receipt.

Permission and seller protection are separate

An allowed design is not automatically covered by seller protection. Depop’s seller-protection terms require all applicable conditions, including a BUY-button sale, the provided Depop Shipping label, shipment within five days and the receipt address. The total-value caps are £250 in the UK, $300 in the US and A$450 in Australia, including shipping and taxes.

Clock What it measures
5 days from the transaction Shipment with the provided Depop label is one condition of seller protection; it is not a general permission for any supplier parcel.
10 days from purchase in the US The shipping guide’s cancellation/refund deadline for an unshipped order; Other shipping also needs timely tracking entry.
30 days from purchase The eligible buyer’s reporting window for non-arrival, damage or a significantly different item. This starts at purchase, not delivery.

On a phone, swipe the table sideways to compare every column.

Disclosure does not extend a shipment deadline

Before posting, compare the partner’s production and dispatch estimate with the applicable deadline and label rules. A tracked parcel from a production partner can still be outside seller protection. If the proposed production time cannot meet the required shipment deadline, do not accept that made-to-order sale on the promise that disclosure will fix it.

Illustrative Depop deadlines: five-day seller-protection shipment condition, ten-day US unshipped-order limit, and thirty-day eligible buyer reporting window.
Illustrative policy clocks: the five-day provided-label condition, US ten-day unshipped-order deadline and thirty-day buyer reporting window measure different things. Seller-protection conditions still apply.

04

Calculate the fees for your country

Depop’s seller-fee table currently lists no Depop selling fee for sellers based in the UK, US or Australia. Payment processing still applies to the item price, shipping and applicable taxes.

Seller location Depop Payments processing
UK 2.9% + £0.30
US 3.3% + US$0.45
Australia 2.6% + A$0.30

On a phone, swipe the table sideways to compare every column.

For sellers outside those countries, the table describes a 10% selling fee when selling in a currency other than GBP, USD or AUD, plus location-dependent PayPal processing. The selling-fee base excludes tax and includes shipping when a Depop Shipping label is not used. Check the country and currency conditions rather than assuming the US “no selling fee” rule applies everywhere.

Add the boost fee only when it applies

Boosting is optional paid promotion. The fee table lists 12% for UK and US new listings from March 23, 2026, and 8% outside those countries. Depop’s boosting guide explains the attribution: a buyer who interacts with a boosted listing and purchases within 28 days can trigger the fee. Stopping the boost does not erase earlier qualifying interactions.

The boost base excludes taxes and includes shipping if you arrange your own shipment; Depop Shipping label charges are not included in that base. For the later US example with $30 merchandise and $5 manually arranged shipping, 12% of $35 is $4.20 if the sale qualifies for attribution.

Use the current fee receipt

There is a discrepancy in the UK example on the separate Boosted Listings Policy page: it uses 3.3% + £0.45 processing, while the dedicated seller-fee table lists 2.9% + £0.30 for the UK. Use the current country fee table and actual sale receipt; do not copy that example as a confirmed UK total.

Collected tax is not seller revenue

Where Depop collects US sales tax, that tax is not Leah’s revenue, though it increases the processing-fee base. Platform sales-tax collection also does not replace her personal or business tax obligations.

05

Send the original-design order to the provider

Printful is a named option for making an original-design shirt, but it does not integrate directly with Depop. Plan a manual handoff. A Depop sale will not automatically become a paid Printful order, and this provider option does not itself approve the listing.

Once the item, shipment method and deadlines are suitable, Leah can use Printful’s documented manual-order flow:

  1. Sign in to the provider account and choose New order. For a normal customer purchase, choose a Basic order rather than assuming a sample discount applies.
  2. Select the saved product template or create the exact product. Match the artwork, shirt model, color, size and quantity to the Depop sale.
  3. Enter the buyer’s address exactly as shown on the Depop receipt. Keep the Depop order reference alongside the provider order.
  4. Calculate shipping and choose a permitted, sufficiently timely method. Review the actual production, shipment and billing amounts.
  5. Confirm the details and pay to submit the order. Inspect acceptance and subsequent shipment; a draft or failed payment is not a funded production order.

Depop proceeds do not automatically fund Printful

Printful’s wallet guide explains provider billing. Its primary payment method can fund the wallet, and fulfillment costs are deducted from it. An empty wallet without a usable billing method leaves orders Failed until payment is provided. Depop’s pending buyer proceeds do not automatically fund that wallet.

When the partner provides the genuine tracking number, match it to the correct parcel and enter it through the Depop sold-item receipt where manual tracking is required. Keep the postage evidence and watch the actual carrier scan. Do not create a second paid provider order just because a tracking message is slow.

Depop’s Selling API also cannot be used to create policy-incompatible listings. API availability is not proof of a supported Printful connection or a way to automate the prohibited catalogue route. We have not placed an order, measured production or tested a seller account.

06

Keep money ready while your payout is pending

Take a hypothetical US original-design shirt sale with manually arranged shipping. Leah charges $30 for the shirt and $5 shipping. Assume the provider charges $14 for the product and $5 for shipment. She also spent $30 on an initial sample and chooses to spread that cost over ten sales. These item and sample amounts are assumptions, not a provider quote.

The example excludes sales tax to keep the arithmetic visible. If tax is collected, include it in the actual processing-fee base; do not count it as profit.

Line USD amount
Customer pays $30 + $5 $35.00
Provider product and shipment: $14 + $5 −$19.00
US processing: $35 × 3.3% + $0.45, rounded −$1.61
Sample allocation: $30 ÷ 10 assumed sales −$3.00
Remaining before other costs, taxes and refunds $11.39
Optional attributed boost: $35 × 12% −$4.20
Remaining if that boost fee applies $7.19

On a phone, swipe the table sideways to compare every column.

The unboosted calculation is $35 − $19 − $1.61 − $3 = $11.39. An attributed boost reduces it to $7.19. This does not predict ten sales or establish a profit; other tools, time, failed orders and refund costs still matter.

Cash is a separate calculation. Ten provider orders cost $190. Add the initial $30 sample payment and a separate $35 customer-refund reserve: $255 available before payout in this illustration. Allocating $3 per sale does not put the sample’s cash back in Leah’s account at the start.

Allow for the payout delay

Depop’s US payout guide describes funds reaching the Depop Balance two business days after delivery or ten business days after the sale, whichever comes first. Money still marked Pending is not available to withdraw. A withdrawal to the linked bank can then take up to five days. Check the actual balance and account notices rather than promising the partner immediate customer-funded payment.

The UK guide differs: Depop Shipping through Evri uses the earlier two-business-days-after-delivery or ten-business-days-after-sale timing, while manual shipping is described as ten business days after delivery. Bank arrival can take up to five days, and some account groups use different schedules. Complete the required bank and identity checks, and use your country’s actual account terms.

07

Resolve the buyer's problem without waiting for a supplier credit

If the buyer receives the wrong size, wrong color or a damaged shirt, compare the delivered item with Leah’s actual listing. An incorrect described size is different from a correctly described shirt that simply does not fit. A provider’s change-of-mind rule does not erase responsibility for sending the wrong item.

For the buyer: Give a clear replacement or refund answer and workable return instructions. Depop refunds draw from the available balance or connected top-up card; an agreed partial refund can let the buyer keep the item. Do not delay a due refund while you pursue the production partner with the order, photos and item description.

For your provider balance: Printful’s ordinary registered-account refunds default to the Printful Wallet. That credit can fund another provider order; it does not refund the Depop buyer. Reconcile the buyer payment and provider credit as separate entries.

Know which clock applies to the buyer

Eligible Depop Payments buyers in the UK, US and Australia have a 30-day reporting window from purchase for non-arrival, damage or a significantly different item. If a return is agreed, Depop’s return instructions say the item must be returned within seven days of that agreement. This is a separate clock, not seven days from the original sale. Use the approved return instructions and address. In-app US returns receive a prepaid label; other buyers may need tracked postage, with the documented reimbursement limits and conditions.

Depop’s fee guide says refunded Depop Payments sales reverse the applicable platform, processing and boosting fees automatically. That does not guarantee the production partner will reverse a made shirt or reimburse the same costs. Inspect the actual refund and provider credit rather than assuming the sale disappeared from both accounts.

If the listing itself is challenged

If Depop removes the listing, use the appeal route in its notification and provide genuine design, purchased-assessment and partner details. Do not hide the origin, relabel a catalogue item or copy the listing into another account. An appeal is a review request, not guaranteed approval.

Choose the permitted route, or another channel

This route fits a creator who can develop original products, assess them personally and manage the production and shipment carefully. It does not fit a plan to upload a wholesaler’s catalogue and buy each item only after sale. If you are choosing a different storefront, compare dropshipping platforms; if Etsy is another possibility, read its separate product and design rules rather than assuming Depop’s exception transfers.

If the original design needs a production partner

For a genuinely original product involving China-side production, AIDrop’s product-sourcing service can help discuss supplier options, specifications, quality checks and packaging. Send us your original-design/product reference, destination, expected orders and the production or delivery question. We can review the supply needs with you; Depop eligibility, manufacturing claims and a shipment route that meets its deadlines still require their own confirmation. This is a service enquiry on our website, not an instruction to move a Depop buyer’s payment off-platform.

Leah’s first step is to assess a real sample of her own design and a feasible shipment route. If either fails, fix the product or choose an appropriate different sales channel before posting.

Questions about selling original designs on Depop

Can I list an unchanged supplier dress if I buy a sample?

That does not make bought-to-order catalogue dropshipping permissible. Depop’s design exception concerns items you personally designed. A sample or original photograph of an unchanged supplier dress does not change that distinction.

Can my own shirt design be printed and shipped by a partner?

It can fall within the stated on-demand exception if you meet all the conditions. Purchase and assess the item, take original product photos, write your own accurate description and disclose the partner and delivery details. The supplier’s willingness to print is not Depop approval.

Can I use the provider’s mockup instead of taking a photo?

Depop’s policy requires original photographs of the items for this route. Use the actual item you purchased and assessed. A stock image or generated illustration in an educational guide is not a qualifying photograph of your product.

Is a partner’s tracked parcel automatically protected?

No. Seller protection has separate conditions, including the provided Depop label, receipt address and five-day shipment requirement. The US ten-day cancellation rule is another deadline. Verify both the allowed listing and actual shipping arrangement.

Will a provider wallet credit refund my Depop buyer?

No. Return the buyer’s money through the supported Depop payment/refund route and verify its result. A production partner’s wallet credit belongs to a separate account and may only pay for a later supplier order.
