No, you cannot use Mercari US to dropship items you do not possess. Mercari’s Prohibited Items policy places “Dropshipping” under “Items not in your possession.” It also rules out items you do not currently have, items still on order and listings for goods to be shipped at a future date. That answers the ordinary supplier-to-buyer plan before you choose a shipping label or list a product.

Imagine finding a camera in another store’s catalog, posting it on Mercari, then buying it only after your customer pays. Even if that store offers fast delivery, you do not have the item when you list it. The plan conflicts with Mercari’s stated rule. Buying the camera first, receiving it and then deciding whether to resell it is a different model.

01

Read the listing rule before the shipping menu

Mercari’s policy is unusually direct. You do not have to infer its view of dropshipping from a late-shipment rule or a customer complaint: the word appears in the prohibited-items list. The same section covers products not yet in hand or still on order. A supplier saying “in stock” means the supplier may have units; it does not mean the seller has the camera in their possession.

The possession check applies when you list. If the camera is still in the supplier’s catalog, a later purchase does not change that earlier fact.

Ordering it the day before listing is also insufficient while it is still in transit. Mercari explicitly includes items on order. Wait until the actual camera is in hand, then evaluate a normal resale listing under the remaining rules.

Policy violations can affect listings and accounts

Mercari says a prohibited listing can be removed and a related transaction cancelled; account suspension or termination is also within its stated options. Its account-limit guidance separately names prohibited items as a reason an account may be limited or closed. These are potential consequences, not a claim that every mistake gets the same penalty. The practical point is simple: make the item-possession decision before you expose a buyer to the offer.

02

“Ship on your own” is not a dropshipping exception

Mercari’s seller interface lets you select a prepaid Mercari label or ship on your own. The latter means you buy and use your own supported-carrier label, enter valid tracking and bear the shipping cost. Mercari also says those shipments do not qualify for its Shipping Protection.

That option answers how a permitted sale will travel. It does not rewrite the Prohibited Items list. If the camera is only in a supplier’s warehouse, selecting own-label does not move it onto your shelf. A third party’s tracking number is not evidence that the listing was eligible.

Confirm dispatch only after physical drop-off

For a permitted sale using the current documented Mercari flow, keep the actual parcel and the Order Status page together. This step does not authorize a supplier-held listing.

Before drop-off

Check the item, packed parcel and supported label. With own-label shipping, enter valid tracking and bear the actual costs; Mercari says its Shipping Protection does not cover that route. Check any separate carrier insurance terms yourself.

After drop-off

On Order Status, select Confirm as sent and confirm that the parcel was dropped off. Reopen the order and compare its tracking with the actual carrier receipt or event. Do not mark it sent because a supplier created a number.

The current shipping help asks for dispatch within three business days and warns against confirmation before drop-off. Check the deadline and instructions for your actual order. A confirmed status and a carrier’s receipt are different evidence.

A shipping screen can let you select a carrier and calculate a cost without answering whether the item was eligible to list. Mercari’s Marketplace Guidelines still require accurate representation and address items you do not own.

Choose a label only after the actual item passes the listing checks. Supplier tracking cannot substitute for that earlier eligibility decision.

03

Try the camera listing three ways

Use the same product idea and change just one fact: who has the camera at listing time.

Your situation when you publish What the rule means Decision
A supplier has the camera and will mail it after a Mercari buyer pays The item is not in your possession; this is the prohibited dropshipping model Do not list it on Mercari US.
You ordered the camera but it has not arrived Mercari also names items on order or to be shipped later Wait. An order receipt is not the physical item.
You have received the actual camera, checked its condition and can pack it The item is now in your possession; this removes the dropshipping objection only Assess a normal resale listing against all other Mercari rules.

On a phone, swipe the table sideways to compare every column.

The final row is not blanket approval. You still need a truthful description, an accurate condition, the right to sell the product and a category that Mercari permits. Its Seller Protection guide describes photos, brand, category and condition as listing inputs and expects the seller to pack and dispatch a sold item promptly. You should only promise what you can deliver from the item actually in hand.

Make the received camera a truthful resale offer

For a fictional camera received by you, record the actual unit before writing the listing. No camera was inspected for this article.

Photograph and check the actual unit

Record model, condition, ordinary function checks you genuinely performed, visible defects and included battery/charger/lens or other parts. Use clear real-unit photos. Say when a function is untested rather than copying a supplier’s “fully working” claim.

Confirm it can be listed and shipped

Check the current category, right-to-sell and product restrictions. Follow the maker and carrier’s applicable packing and battery instructions for that exact unit. Use the real packed parcel data for your chosen label; do not assume every camera kit has identical shipping conditions.

Reopen the draft and compare the headline, condition, photos, included parts and delivery choice. A truthful received-unit record is evidence for this listing, not permission to import an uninspected camera catalog.

Warehouse custody needs an account-specific answer

What if the camera sits in a separate warehouse that you own or rent? Here the facts are different from a supplier catalog: you may own a specific unit and control its shipment. The public prohibition still asks whether the item is in your possession, and we have not verified how Mercari would classify every custody arrangement. A supplier reservation, purchase order or warehouse integration does not answer that account-specific question. Ask Mercari before listing if physical custody is unclear; do not treat a shipping setting as the answer.

04

Choose a route that fits the business you want

If you want to sell goods without holding them, decide on the selling channel before integrating a supplier. Your flow is: buyer orders from your store, your supplier picks a real unit, and the supplier ships it directly to that buyer. Mercari US explicitly prohibits the not-in-your-possession version of this flow. Its label options cannot change that.

Stock-first resale requires cash and physical inspection

One route is stock-first resale. Buy and receive the exact item, inspect it, take accurate photos, and evaluate it under Mercari’s other current rules. This uses working capital and means you handle the product, but it is not supplier-direct dropshipping. It also gives you firsthand knowledge of the unit you describe.

Choose a channel that permits the intended model

The other route is to compare selling channels that might support supplier fulfillment. Start with the platform comparison, then read the shortlisted platform’s own current seller and fulfillment terms. Do not transfer the conclusion from one marketplace to another, and do not assume that a supplier directory proves a platform permits that model. Once the channel is settled, a supplier-selection guide helps with product and order reliability.

Do not hide the possession issue in different wording

If you have already drafted a Mercari listing for an item still at another retailer, stop before publishing it. If you have already published one, review Mercari’s current policy and use the platform’s own support path for the next account-specific action. Creating another listing with different wording or shipping settings does not answer the possession issue.

The conclusion is for Mercari US

This decision uses Mercari US Help Center policy. If your account is in Japan or another market, consult that market’s own rules before applying this US conclusion; the wording and seller requirements may differ.

If you’re building a genuine supplier-to-customer store and need to scope its sourcing, packaging or shipping workflow, send AIDrop Agent the product and target market. We can discuss feasibility for that proposed setup. That conversation is not a claim that Mercari permits dropshipping or that AIDrop can override a marketplace policy.

Questions about Mercari US dropshipping

Can I list a camera while my supplier order is in transit?

The current prohibition covers items on order and items you do not currently have. Wait until the actual camera is in your possession before considering a normal resale listing.

Does Ship on your own let the supplier fulfill it?

No. It is a shipping choice for a permitted sale, not an exception to the possession rule. Its costs, tracking requirements and Shipping Protection exclusion also need separate attention.

What if I own stock stored at a warehouse?

That differs from ordering a unit out of a supplier catalog after sale, but the public policy still refers to possession. Ask Mercari about the actual custody and account arrangement before listing; an invoice or integration alone is not the answer.

Does this conclusion apply to Mercari Japan?

This review uses the US Help Center. Consult the relevant market’s own current rules and account conditions before applying a US conclusion elsewhere.
