You generally need to be 18, or the higher local age of majority where a provider requires it, to own the usual store and payment accounts yourself. There is no single worldwide law called “the dropshipping age.” Each store platform, payment service, supplier and bank has its own requirements.

Under 18, you can learn the business. Some services also allow a young person to participate through a genuine adult owner or a specified guardian arrangement. That means the adult accepts the responsibility, supplies accurate information and handles the money. Borrowing a parent’s ID while secretly running the account does not create that arrangement.

A supervised notebook project

Imagine Maya, 16, wants to sell notebooks bearing her own drawings. Her mother, Lena, is willing to operate the business. Maya can work on designs and compare samples; Lena must first choose services that allow the proposed setup. When a customer pays $28, someone still has to pay for the notebook, answer a delivery complaint and fund a refund. The account rules determine who can take on those jobs.

01

Check the whole account chain

A store account displays the notebook. A payment account collects the buyer’s money. A supplier account orders the printed notebook, and a bank account receives payouts. Permission to use one service does not make you eligible for the other three.

“Age of majority” means the age at which local law generally treats someone as an adult. It is not always enough to look for an 18+ checkbox: a provider may require the higher local age, a particular account representative or additional verification.

Service Current age rule or supported arrangement What it means for Maya
Shopify store Account opener must be the older of 18 or the local age of majority. Lena would have to be the genuine eligible owner; Maya cannot open an owner account just because another payment service allows younger users.
Shopify Payments Account representative must be 18+. Under-18 applicants are directed to a parent or guardian using that adult’s details. Business, country and product eligibility still apply. Choose the actual adult representative and accurate business details, rather than changing Maya’s birth date.
Stripe Generally at least 13; under 18, a legal guardian must take the required account-owner role before charges or bank transfers. Brazil requires 18. Account type and country matter. Follow Stripe’s guardian procedure where available. This does not override Shopify’s separate owner rule.
PayPal US An individual must be a US resident and at least 18 or the state’s age of majority. A minor cannot solve this by using an adult’s ID or claiming an older age. Other countries have their own agreements.
eBay Members must be 18+. Do not treat eBay as an under-18 member-account option.
Etsy Ages 13–17 may participate with permission and direct supervision of a parent or legal guardian who owns the account. Under 13 is not allowed. This is a supervised creative-business route, with the adult responsible for account activity.
Square US Its reviewed US general terms require an individual to be 18, located in the US and able to enter the agreement. The revised terms apply to new signups from September 10, 2026 and all sellers from October 10; existing accounts must read their applicable terms.
Printful Individual users must be 18; the reviewed terms separately specify 20 in Japan. The supplier service can add an age requirement after the storefront and payment questions are solved. The Japan figure is Printful’s condition, not a statement about Japan’s general adult age.

Check the owner across all the services

For Maya, the decision is sequential: can Lena own the storefront, set up its payment method, and use the chosen printer under each service’s current terms? If one answer is no, they should change the service or keep the project in practice mode before opening checkout. Permission from Lena alone does not activate an account. Stripe’s agreement also makes the adult representative responsible for the underage user’s actions.

Etsy needs original designs and its supervised arrangement

For Maya’s original notebook drawings, Etsy could be worth considering with Lena. Its minor-selling instructions put the account name, email and financial information with the adult and require shop participants to be described appropriately. Separately, Etsy’s Creativity Standards allow original seller designs made by a disclosed production partner, with accurate shipping information. A generic notebook bought from a catalog does not become an eligible Etsy product simply because an adult owns the shop.

We rechecked Shopify’s owner terms, Stripe’s under-18 guidance and Etsy’s minor-selling instructions on October 11, 2026. The other provider and local-law examples retain their September 28 review date. Before paying for an app, check the terms for the actual country and account type, including the verified owner and bank details required.

02

Make the adult a real owner, not a borrowed name

If Lena operates the store, she registers the required accounts herself and understands the agreements she accepts. The identity, address, business information and banking details must describe the real arrangement and meet each provider’s requirements. A photograph of her ID sent to Maya is not a substitute for her involvement.

Maya and Lena should agree on a few practical decisions before the first sale: who can spend money, how much they can spend, who approves a refund and who checks messages each day. Lena needs access to the bills and enough available cash to deal with a failed order. “I’ll help if something goes wrong” is too vague when a buyer expects an answer today.

Their notebook project could divide the work like this:

Maya prepares the product

Maya draws the artwork, compares sample print quality and prepares a draft product description with accurate size and paper details.

Lena operates the business

Lena chooses and pays for the services, completes verification, approves prices and shipping promises, and deals with customer money and supplier purchases.

A damaged notebook gets an adult decision

Maya drafts a reply if the notebook arrives damaged; Lena decides the remedy and actually issues the refund through the appropriate account.

Some platforms offer limited user roles, allowing a person to edit products without managing payouts. Shopify’s permissions documentation explains those controls, but it does not by itself establish that Maya is eligible for a user account. Confirm permitted participation before inviting her. Where individual access is not allowed or remains unclear, she can prepare drawings, spreadsheets and draft replies outside the account for Lena to use. Do not share the owner’s password as a workaround.

The adult also needs to understand the selling model. With dropshipping, a supplier sends the order, but the store remains the customer’s seller. If the parcel is late, the customer contacts Lena’s shop; they should not be told to chase an unfamiliar supplier. The broader dropshipping setup guide covers the product, supplier and store work that still follows after the age question is resolved.

03

A company name does not change the account’s rules

Forming an LLC or another company does not automatically let a minor open any desired store or payment account. The business may be a separate legal entity, but the service still asks who owns it, represents it and has authority to accept its agreement.

Contract law also depends on location. California law allows minors to enter some contracts and gives them a qualified right to disaffirm, with statutory limits. That does not give Maya a way to ignore a supplier bill or force a payment provider to open an account for her.

A director’s age and Shopify’s owner age differ

In the UK, a private-company director can be 16 or older. A 16-year-old director still needs to meet each merchant service’s separate account rules; Shopify’s owner rule remains the older of 18 or local majority. Check the actual country, company role and named account representative together before paying to form a company.

If Lena runs a US sole proprietorship, she should also understand that it is not a separate legal entity protecting her from all business liabilities. The SBA’s business-structure guidance explains the distinctions. Registration, banking, ownership and local tax questions belong with the relevant authority or a qualified adviser who knows the actual people and location. Our guide to dropshipping legality covers the broader selling obligations; it cannot decide a particular family’s legal arrangement.

04

Walk through one $28 notebook order

Follow the money for one notebook. The costs below are hypothetical, not a quote from Printful, Etsy or a payment provider. Assume it sells for $28, with no separately charged shipping or tax in this simplified calculation.

  • Customer payment: $28.00
  • Notebook production cost: −$9.00
  • Supplier shipping: −$5.00
  • Selling/payment fee: −$1.20
  • Estimated allowance for returns and problems: −$1.80
  • Remainder before ads, subscriptions and taxes: $11.00

The arithmetic is $28 − $9 − $5 − $1.20 − $1.80 = $11. The $1.80 is a planning allowance, not a fee taken by a particular company. Replace every assumed cost with the actual service’s charges before setting a price.

The notebook must be funded before the payout

The customer payment and the bank payout are different events. A payout is the money the payment service transfers to the business’s bank. If the supplier needs $14 for production and shipping before that transfer arrives, ten notebook orders need $140 available for supplier purchases. “We made ten sales” does not mean that $140 is already spendable in the bank.

What if the first notebook arrives damaged?

An actual refund can exceed the allowance

Now suppose one notebook arrives damaged and Lena owes the buyer a full $28 refund. If the $9 production cost, $5 shipping and $1.20 fee are all unrecoverable, that failed order loses $15.20, before any extra return cost. A later supplier reimbursement could reduce the loss, but Lena cannot assume it will happen. The allowance in the cost list helps plan for problems; it should not be subtracted again as though it were another actual bill on this failed order.

The customer refund and the supplier claim are separate transactions. Lena handles the remedy owed to the customer while pursuing any supplier reimbursement under that supplier’s terms. Maya can photograph the damaged notebook and draft the message, but the operating adult needs authority and cash to resolve it.

Illustrative notebook example: ten supplier purchases need $140; a separate $28 customer refund leaves $15.20 unrecovered under the stated assumptions.
Illustrative assumed costs: supplier purchases need available cash, while the customer refund and any supplier reimbursement are separate. The $15.20 loss assumes no recovery of production, shipping or the fee.

For US orders, the FTC’s shipment rules require a reasonable basis for the advertised shipping time, or generally shipment within 30 days when no time is stated. If the seller cannot ship as promised, the rule calls for the appropriate delay consent or refund. That is about shipment, not a blanket 30-day delivery promise. A young person’s school schedule does not make a customer’s paid order disappear.

05

Build a useful practice project before checkout

If no suitable adult is willing to operate the business, you can still prepare something much more useful than a folder of “winning product” screenshots. Make a practice project that does not collect customer money or require an account you are ineligible to use.

For the notebook, Maya could produce five things:

  1. A one-page product description: cover size, page count, paper type, intended buyer and what makes her original drawing suitable for that buyer.
  2. A comparison of real alternatives: what competing notebooks cost, which details their pages explain, and what questions are left unanswered. Public listings are research material, not permission to copy another seller’s design or photos.
  3. A mock product page: use her own artwork and clearly describe it as a practice page, with no active checkout or misleading promise that goods are available.
  4. A cost sheet: start with the $28 example, then write down which supplier and shipping amounts remain unknown. A low product price alone does not establish a viable sale.
  5. Two customer replies: one for a missing parcel and one for damaged printing. Explain the information needed and a proposed remedy without pretending a real order has occurred.

That project helps Maya discover whether she enjoys the ordinary work: describing paper accurately, comparing costs and answering an awkward complaint. It also gives a future adult operator something concrete to discuss. Use only tools whose terms permit your access; a learning project is not a reason to misstate your age.

06

Start with one supervised offer when the setup is ready

Once Lena has confirmed the real account arrangement, the next task is to prove that one notebook can be sold and delivered as described. A big catalog would multiply questions they have not yet answered.

She should complete the required identity, business, bank and tax information; read the supplier’s purchase and return terms; and order a sample through an eligible arrangement. Maya can compare the printed cover with her original drawing, count the pages and note whether the notebook arrives protected. Their product page should use the actual specifications and realistic production-plus-transit time, rather than copying the fastest delivery claim they can find.

A checkout test does not prove supplier delivery

Use the store or provider’s permitted test process to understand checkout, order notifications and refunds before taking public orders. Lena should know how a supplier purchase is triggered, whether it requires separate payment, and where she will see a parcel’s tracking. A successful payment test does not prove the supplier can make the notebook correctly; the sample answers a different question.

Set a small order limit the adult can fund

Keep the first order level within the adult’s budget

Then agree on a small order level the adult can fund, a daily message routine and what to do if stock or production changes. If the supplier cannot make the promised notebook, do not quietly send a different design. Contact the buyer and handle the replacement or refund under the applicable terms.

For an adult-operated project sourcing products from China, AIDrop’s product-sourcing service can help discuss supplier options, sample checks and packaging needs. Lena can contact the team with the product link or original specifications, destination country, expected order volume and the specific question—for example, whether the cover finish and protective packaging are suitable. This is help with the physical product and supply process; it does not provide legal or tax advice, create a minor’s merchant account or guarantee platform approval or sales.

07

Questions teens and parents ask

Can I start at 13, 16 or 17?

You can learn at those ages, but taking customer payments needs an eligible setup. Etsy permits ages 13–17 to participate under its adult-owned, directly supervised arrangement; Stripe describes a guardian procedure from 13 in supported circumstances, with the Brazil exception. Neither permission applies automatically to another store, bank or supplier. Under 13, Etsy does not allow participation under its minors policy.

Can I use my parent’s PayPal?

Do not borrow an adult’s account or identity to conceal the real operator. For a genuine adult-operated business, the adult must use an account and business setup that comply with PayPal’s applicable agreement. The US individual-account rule is 18 or the state’s age of majority, alongside US residency. A parent being willing to lend a name does not change that rule.

Do I take over the store automatically when I turn 18?

No. First check whether you meet the actual service and local requirements; some rules use a higher age of majority. Then follow each provider’s formal ownership, business and verification procedures. Store ownership, payment representative, supplier account and bank details may require different changes. Simply replacing Lena’s bank account with Maya’s could leave identity and financial information inconsistent. Existing orders and refunds also need a clear responsible operator during any transition.

Does a young seller need to think about tax?

Yes, but the answer depends on the real business, ownership and income—not just the birth date on a store account. In the US, the IRS says net self-employment earnings of $400 or more generally require a return; other filing requirements can apply below that. “Net” means after allowable business expenses, not total sales. It is not a $400 tax-free sales allowance, and it does not settle whose income a particular family arrangement produces. Keep accurate sales and expense records and get advice for the actual setup.

The useful first decision is whether a real adult will operate a permitted business with you. If so, choose the account arrangement before spending on apps. If not, build the product, cost and customer-service skills now, and leave checkout until you can meet its requirements.
