Illustrative licensed reading-journal file moves from creator through merchant to buyer under resale permission.

Digital dropshipping usually means selling a digital product made by someone else, with permission to resell it. The customer receives a file, a software key or online access instead of a parcel. You take the order and organize delivery and support; the creator supplies the product under the agreement you have made.

Imagine selling a printable reading journal. A designer makes the pages, you obtain permission to sell that particular file, and a customer buys it from your store. A download app sends the PDF. There is no box to pack, but there are still three things to get right: permission to sell, a useful product and access that works after payment.

Use a defined file, not a vague digital product

The journal is a hypothetical example; we have not licensed or tested one. It lets us follow a single offer from the creator’s agreement to the customer’s first download. For the physical model, see what dropshipping means and how it works.

01

Separate licensed resale from creating a file or recommending one

Selling your own PDF, reselling a designer’s PDF and recommending that PDF through an affiliate link are different arrangements. Shopify’s digital-dropshipping explanation describes third-party products sold under resale permission. The distinction matters because it changes who needs permission, who receives the payment and where the buyer asks for help.

Arrangement What you provide What happens when a buyer orders
Your own digital product A file or service you create, using material you may use commercially Your store sells it and arranges delivery and support
Licensed digital resale A third party’s named product that your agreement permits you to sell Your store takes the sale and delivers through the agreed method; fees and responsibilities follow the contract
Affiliate recommendation A link directing the shopper to another seller That seller normally takes the order; your commission depends on the affiliate agreement

On a phone, swipe the table sideways to compare every column.

For our journal, the customer buys from your store. You need the final PDF and a way to deliver it, while the designer needs to know which uses you are paying for. An app that sends downloads does not supply those rights.

Delivery can also mean different things. A PDF can be downloaded and opened locally. A software purchase may supply a license key. A course may grant access to another website. With a key or course, ask who activates access, what account the buyer needs and what happens when access expires. Sending a key is only one step if the customer must still redeem it elsewhere.

Choose the product format before the tool. A printable journal needs readable pages and a reliable download. It does not need a complicated membership system merely because other digital businesses use one.

02

Get permission for the product you intend to sell

Buying a download is not enough to establish resale permission. The US Copyright Office distinguishes owning a copy from owning copyright. Start with the creator or authorized licensor and the actual agreement for the journal, including any third-party images, fonts or other material it contains.

The permission needs to match your intended sale:

  • Which product and version? The named 12-page reading-journal PDF, in the supplied Letter and A4 versions
  • Where can it be sold? The merchant’s own store, to the countries named in the agreement
  • Can the merchant change it? Unchanged file unless written permission allows edits or branding
  • What can the buyer do? Print and use it personally; no redistribution or resale unless expressly permitted
  • What does the merchant pay? The agreed upfront fee, royalty per sale or subscription, with payment dates
  • What happens later? Who supplies corrections and support, and what happens to existing buyers if the agreement ends

You could send this concrete request: “I want to sell your reading-journal version 1 as an unchanged download on my own store. Buyers would receive the Letter and A4 PDFs for personal printing. Please confirm the permitted countries, whether I may use your preview images, what buyers may do with the files, the fees and how existing orders are supported if our agreement ends.” This is a product inquiry, not a legal contract template.

MRR and PLR labels do not replace the agreement

Terms such as resell rights, master resell rights and private label rights are often shortened to RR, MRR and PLR. Read the actual terms rather than treating those initials as a standard license. One vendor may allow onward resale; another may restrict editing, marketplaces, bundles or pricing. Your agreement must settle those choices for this product.

Check the journal’s ingredients too. Creative Market and Canva both distinguish a finished design from resale of source content, and impose their own template conditions. Ask the designer to confirm that the images, fonts and other assets permit this specific finished download.

Resale permission and Etsy eligibility are separate

Finally, the sales channel has its own rules. Etsy’s creativity standards require a seller’s original design for digital downloads. Permission to resell someone else’s unchanged journal does not by itself make that journal eligible for Etsy. Use the channel your product and arrangement actually qualify for.

03

Describe the file before the customer pays

Open the final files and compare them with the product page. A pretty cover image cannot tell a buyer whether the journal is printable, editable, dated or suitable for the paper in their printer.

A possible description for our hypothetical offer would be:

“Two PDFs containing the same 12-page reading journal: one for US Letter paper and one for A4. Includes reading-log and review pages. Print the pages you need and complete them by hand. No printed notebook is shipped. This version is not an editable template. Personal use only under the included buyer terms.”

Only publish those details when the supplied files and license support them. Show representative inside pages, explain how the buyer receives the download and identify a support contact. If printing software or another account is required, say so before checkout. A Canva template link and a finished PDF create different customer tasks.

Find the version the buyer actually received

Keep the sold file version beside its description. If a buyer reports missing pages, you can compare what they received with what you promised.

Digital delivery still has consumer obligations

Write a workable remedy policy too. For EU consumers, digital-content guarantees and withdrawal rules are different matters. The download exception to withdrawal has consent conditions; it does not remove remedies for faulty content. “Digital products: no refunds” is not a substitute for checking the rules that apply to your buyers.

Digital products can also have tax obligations. A store’s physical-shipping setting and its tax setting are separate choices. Configure them for the actual product and applicable registration requirements, rather than treating “no parcel” as “no tax.”

04

Add the licensed PDFs and arrange paid delivery

Here is one route using Shopify’s app. Its help page, checked October 11, 2026, calls it Digital Products. The following settings belong to that app; another delivery tool may behave differently.

  1. Install Digital Products if it is missing, then open Apps → Digital Products.
  2. Choose Add assets → File. Upload the licensed Letter and A4 PDFs; a first-use screen may show Add file instead.
  3. Add the second asset if needed. In fulfillment settings, choose the access limit and automatic or manual delivery, then save.
  4. Open Products separately to set the price, status, sales channels and listing details. Check that the offer points to the correct files and variant.
  5. For automatic delivery, check the buyer email and download route. Manual fulfillment does not display the download link on Thank you/Order status pages, even after fulfillment.
  6. For download access at checkout, use an active Shopify plan. Go to the app’s Settings. Under Digital products at checkout, click Add beside Digital product at checkout in your online store to open the checkout editor. Add the Digital Products block to the Thank you page, the Order status page or both, then save. This feature is unavailable on development, paused or inactive stores.

The app currently accepts files up to 5 GB and multiple assets; folders need an archive such as a ZIP. A hosted-link product must also use a supported provider. Do not assume any external URL will be accepted.

For the journal, keep the delivery simple: two clearly named PDFs, with instructions for choosing the paper size. Check the product’s nonphysical-shipping setting and tax configuration separately. An asset upload should not leave the customer choosing an irrelevant parcel-shipping method.

05

Follow a purchase through—and know how to rescue access

Before accepting live orders, use the store’s available test method to follow checkout, confirmation, email, download and opening the file. Then verify the actual paid-delivery behavior before relying on it. We have not tested an account here. The result you want is specific: a buyer receives both promised PDFs, can open them and knows which one to print.

Ask the buyer where the process stopped. “It does not work” can describe several different problems.

What the buyer sees What to check first Useful next action
Payment made, no email Correct order, fulfillment state and email address Correct the cause and resend the order’s download email
Link opens but access is denied Link permissions, active access and any download limit Restore permitted access; do not simply resend the same blocked link
File downloads but will not open Received file, filename, device and required software Compare with the original and supply a working file or clear instructions
Journal opens but pages are missing File version and the advertised contents Correct the asset and address the affected purchase
Pages print at the wrong size Letter/A4 choice and printer scaling Explain the correct file and print setting before replacing a valid PDF

On a phone, swipe the table sideways to compare every column.

To resend a missing email in Shopify, go to Apps → Digital Products → Orders, open the order number and choose Resend download email. Verify the paid order and buyer before changing an address. The resent email uses the same links and keeps earlier uses in the access count.

Suppose the journal buyer receives the email but the download link says access is denied. The email worked; access to the file did not. Check the paid order, active asset and download limit, correct the cause, then test that buyer’s link. Repeatedly sending the same blocked link will not help.

When the email arrives but the allowance is used up

For a hypothetical journal variant containing both Letter and A4 PDFs, a limit of two uses is shared across those files. Downloading Letter twice could leave no allowance for A4. Resending the original email does not start a new count.

Fix the setting deliberately

In Digital Products, open the product and its variant assets, review Access limit and save the intended allowance. A limit change applies to past and future sales of that variant, not only to this one buyer. If you instead send a new share link, remember that it is not tied to a customer or order and must remain private.

Check the buyer’s actual route

Have the authorized buyer reopen the delivered link and try the required PDF. Confirm it opens as the promised Letter or A4 version. If access fails because the host file is private, changing the allowance will not fix the host’s permission. Resolve that separate cause and test the delivered route again.

This is a proposed recovery check, not a completed store test. Keep the existing paid order; the buyer should not have to buy the journal again because delivery failed.

Hypothetical buyer receives email but a locked journal file needs an access correction and a fresh buyer-link check.
Hypothetical access problem: fix the blocked file permission, then reopen the buyer’s link. Resending the same email alone does not solve it.

A refund does not necessarily revoke future access, and it cannot retrieve a saved file. In Digital Products, customer-link deactivation is a separate order action. A hosted URL or general share link may need a separate permission change.

When replacing a file, previous buyers keep their original links. Shopify says those links deliver the replacement when its file name matches the original; otherwise they keep delivering the original file. Choose Send update when saving to give buyers new links to the replacement. Open the intended version before telling the buyer it is fixed.

06

Count the royalty and customer costs, not just the lack of postage

A digital file avoids a physical delivery bill. It can still carry a license fee, a royalty on each sale, payment charges, customer-acquisition costs and support work. A royalty is the payment owed to the rights holder under your agreement.

Here is a hypothetical $18 journal sale. Every amount is invented for teaching, including the processing fee; none is a platform rate or an earnings forecast. Customer taxes collected for remittance are outside this example.

  • Selling price: $18
  • Creator royalty: −$4
  • Payment processing: −$1
  • Expected refund/problem allowance: −$1
  • Cost of attracting this order: −$5
  • Contribution before fixed costs and tax: $7

Contribution is the money an order leaves toward the costs of running the business. It is not final profit. At 100 orders, this model gives $1,800 of sales and $1,100 of modeled variable costs, leaving $700. Subtract $100 of store/app costs and a $120 upfront license fee: $480 remains before owner time and income tax.

Count the upfront license once

The license fee is already counted once in that $480 result. Spreading it over 100 orders gives $1.20 per order; charging the full $120 again would double-count it. At only ten orders, the $70 contribution would not even cover the $220 of those fixed and upfront costs.

Use actual support experience to revise the problem allowance. A $1 average provision does not limit an individual buyer’s remedy to $1. Time spent answering printing questions also matters even when no refund is needed.

Royalties may be due before payouts

Check payment dates as well. If five orders each owe a $4 royalty before customer payouts become available, you need $20 available to pay the creator. That advance is a timing requirement, not a second royalty expense. Write down when the licensor bills you, when funds reach your account and how you will fund a refund in between.

Replace these amounts with your own agreement and account charges before paying for traffic. If the contribution is too small, changing the product price, permission arrangement or acquisition method may help; automatic delivery alone will not fix the arithmetic.

07

Start with an offer you can support after the download

Digital resale is most useful when you understand the customer’s task well enough to choose and explain the product. For the journal, that might mean helping a reader keep short reviews and remember books they want to read. You need to know whether the supplied pages make that easier, not simply whether the designer offers resale rights.

Find out what the buyer would actually use

Show the permitted preview to likely buyers and ask what they would use, what is unclear and what they already use instead. Interest can guide the description and price; it is not a promise of purchases. Before live sales, finish the permission agreement, inspect the files, check the buyer’s delivery route and fund the fees and remedies.

An editable journal needs an editable file and rights

If buyers keep asking for an editable journal, decide whether you can obtain permission and supply an editable version. Do not rename a fixed PDF “customizable” to capture that interest. If the creator cannot correct a broken file, find a workable remedy before taking more orders for it.

A physical companion is a separate offer. If you later want a reading accessory sourced in China, AIDrop’s product-sourcing service can help clarify that item’s specification, sample, packing and destination. Send the physical product idea and question through contact. Digital-file licensing and delivery remain separate tasks.

FAQ

The label does not establish permission. Check the rights for the named product, its ingredients, your sales channel and your buyers’ intended use. A delivery app cannot resolve missing resale rights or remove consumer obligations.

Does an MRR product let me edit and sell it anywhere?

Read the specific agreement. Master resell rights may concern onward resale without allowing edits, every marketplace or every buyer use. Ask for those permissions explicitly.

Do I need a physical dropshipping supplier?

Not to deliver a PDF. You need the creator or authorized licensor, the agreed files or access and a delivery method. Physical suppliers become relevant only if you add physical goods.

Can downloads be fully automatic?

Delivery can be automated when the asset, payment and app settings are correct. The merchant still handles incorrect files, denied access, questions and remedies. Test the buyer’s route before relying on it.

Will refunding a purchase delete the buyer’s file?

No refund can retrieve a copy already saved on the buyer’s device. Future link access depends on the delivery tool and its settings. Handle the refund and access decision separately.
